Space requirements?

I was looking at the minimum specs for W7 RC1 x64 and it says 20GB HDD. But I wonder if the final release will use more than that after updates installed. Also, what does Vista x64 usually use with all updates installed? I ask this because I'm thinking of getting an X25-E 32GB (all 32GB is usable) for OS and Apps only. I'm trying to find out how many GB's I'll have left after OS install and updates, to have room for a few applications. It seems like it might be doable, but I just wonder how many apps can squeeze on it. Do you think photoshop, dream weaver, firefox, live messenger, powerdvd, and a few others will fit?

I believe vista and 7 x64 take about 10-12 gig so you could install those apps and a few more.

Picked from MS site:

  • A PC for testing that meets these minimum system requirements (specific to Windows 7 RC and subject to change in the final version of Windows 7):
    • 1 GHz or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
    • 1 GB RAM (32-bit) / 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
    • 16 GB available disk space (32-bit) / 20 GB (64-bit)
    • DirectX 9 graphics processor with WDDM 1.0 or higher drive

I tested some installs, upgrades on partitions with less than 16GB Free space, the install mentioned it might take longer unless i had 16 GB Free. upgraded 7057 to 7077 with only 12GB Free. I have increased the FREE size to over 20GB currently, by using Acronis DiskDirector Suite.12.

No user account, nothing installed, no pagefile, no hibernation, no restore, no sleep (does not take hard drive space anyway only memory).

No. You should not have less than 2G RAM for Vista.
7 might be a bit more forgiving, but I wouldn't install it with less than 2G Ram
The processor is too slow also. You won't be happy with the performance.
Honestly speaking, time to upgrade.

Infact, Dell doesn't even supply drivers for Vista on that system, so really no.

It is doable but one poster I helped out ran into space problems with just 32 GB. The OS and some apps were installed on the 32GB drive with only 3.5GB free. System began to "slow down". Problem was solved by moving the temporary/scratch storage locations of the apps off of the 32GB OS drive, FF was one of them.

Also, performing an "in-place" upgrade from the RC 7100 to 7127 and later 7127 to 7232 required ~20GB FREE space in my case (some reported only needing 16Gb free or less). This may not hold true for Post RTM upgrades in the future.

A 64GB drive or 2x32GB RAID0 configuration would alleviate any free space concerns. WINSXS has a tendency to grow not shrink.

Yes it will work. might be a little slow. but yes, also check the OS Specs, You never mentioned which version you wanted to install. so speed an memory requirements depens.
