Speaker and Phones?

I have found this problem because I want to use a softphone, which I want to ring on the speakers, but hear/talk on the laptop speakers.

The trouble is that as far as I can see, when I plug in the phones the speakers a re silenced.

Is there a way to overcome this? So far I have managed to make the PC do nothing when it detects comms activity, but that did not help.
