Barring a problem with the headphone jack, after you unplugged the headphones, try reinstalling the device. Go to the Device Manager, RIGHT click on the device to highlight it, then click Uninstall (DO NOT Uninstall the drivers). Restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the sound. If this doesn't fix it, reinstall the PC vendor's sound drivers.

Hmm, with your headphones unplugged, go to your Sound preferences (Start>type "Sound">Sound) click on Speakers, then click Set Default. Then double click click on Speakers. Go to the Advanced tab and click Test. Do you hear any audio coming from the speakers?
