Speech recognition

Does anyone use speech recognition?

What have your experiences been?

Just curious to see how many people go "UBER LAZY" with a wireless headset like me.

Have done some things with it and it seems a little more advanced than when I frist tried it on Vista.

Any thoughts?

iv played around with it, both on Vista and on 7,
I think its actually taken a step back with 7 "start listening" can take anywhere up to 1 minute to actually execute, on Vista it was instantaneous,
the big reason i dont use it permanently is it is a little tempremental, for instance, to open all Programs from the start menu, what should happen, when you say "start <pause> All Programs" is it should click All Programs, what happens more often than not is it just types "all programs" into the search bar, thats just an example, the Win 7 speech recognition misinterprets commands alot more than the Vista one did in my experience i got a bit annoyed with it and invariably just reached for the mouse because its quicker than trying to sort it by voice, so i turned it off

Yeah from what I've read this sort of software is quick difficult to master and takes a lot of time to properly work. I remember back in the day when you had to speak to it for like 48 hours before it recognized commands. I bet the premium software is amazingish now.

Well, like I said I tried it on Vista, and it seemed like it took about 4 hours to go thru it all. I now have a fresh 7 install, and thought I would mess with it to see if it still works even or even installed. I found it, opened it and it was like BLAM. Mind you I have used it before, experimented is more like it, so the training time dropped, but it seems like it was nearly instantaneous this time.


I'm thinking they have done some improvements. It seems more like a novelty than a real valuable tool to me right now, but I think it has great potential for certain situations.

I quite agree about the potential, I still use it for dictation, it just doesnt work for me as a method of controlling the computer. In fact this message is dictated using Speech Recognition. Maybe in the future it will have an easier time interpreting commands but for now for me at least it will be relegated to dictating the odd email.

Sorry missed your post there. The example of it typing into the search bar rather than clicking is one I have come across.

It definitely needs massive improvement, but I thought I noticed it a little faster myself. But it has been a while since I used it and my system might not be as taxed as it was with the Vista install.

I don't remember the "mouse grid" feature on Vista, maybe I missed that before. Thought it was kinda neat, but again, not super practical.

It's always faster to just grab the mouse, that's for sure.

The dictation could be a cool feature if it didn't take 4 hours to dictate a paragraph, but again a feature for certain people in certain situations.

Really, you got the dictation working, that is cool.

I'm sure I could, but I found it kinda frustrating, and the computer manipulation easier.

Cool. I will look into the dictation more. Always cool to learn new things.

I did find my attempts pretty funny. It's fun to try a dictation, and not edit it, then see what it says. You get some pretty weird outcomes.

the best way to get the dictation working for you, is to dictate a speech, take your pic from these: Famous speeches by Presidents, Prime Ministers and Martin Luther King that will give the computer time to learn how you talk, and you time to learn how to talk to the computer, you have to talk "proper" english to it with no real accent, by the time i had finished dictating the "words at war" speech by Winston Churchill and correcting it along the way, it pretty much knew my voice patterns inside out
