Speeding Up My System

I only use my PC for surfing the net. I rarely play games and don't do any kind of math on it. I would like to speed it up, but am not sure just how much it would help. It is fairly fast now for what I do. I have a pentium 4. If I really wanted to upgrade, I would need a new Motherboard and a CPU. Doing that would cost me close to $200. I have also considered only putting in a SSD which would be maybe $150 and stick with the Pentium 4 I have. It really would not make much sense to upgrade my system a lot because a new one would be more practical. Do you think a new CPU and MB or a new SSD would give me more additional speed?

Hello Jim,

When compared to today's newer CPUs, a P4 is not so fast. To really increase your total performance, a faster CPU and RAM (DDR3) along with a SSD would be best. However for just surfing the net, what you have is fine for now though.

I'd go with a good SSD that has best read/write speed for now until you are ready to do a full system upgrade (CPU, RAM, motherboard).

Thanks for the reply Brink. I am leaning toward the SSD. I just got a fancy new case for my PC last year. It is really nice. That is one reason I don't want to buy a new system.
