Speeding up wireless LAN

I didn't realize how slow my transfer rate was until I tried to copy my 14gb iTunes library between my desktop and laptop (both running Win 7.)

Under my current config, wireless to wireless, I was getting a transfer rate of >0.5mbps. When I connected a cat5 cable to the laptop, things improved <2.2mbps.

I have updated all NIC drivers, no improvement.

Any suggestions on how to proceed?

Go into your router settings and make sure you're using Wireless N.

Checked router settings, I'm using B/G (both enabled). N, which is faster, isn't an option. I can force G, see what happens.

You can force G if all of your devices on the system are G compatible.

However, G's maximum speed is either 54 or 108 Mbps. That's 6.75 MB/s - 13.5 MB/s MAX. You're likely to get half of whatever standard you're on depending on your setup. So if you don't have the extended G, you'll probably end up with a 3-4MB/s max.

If I could get <3mbps via wireless, then it would be an improvement. I also forced channel X, but I was already the only person using it in my area. I need to check the phones as well.


Edit: no go, wireless-to-wireless is >1mbps.

I will go N eventually, but I'll have this problem as long I have my laptop.

Update

• Wireless: >1mbps
• Wireless-to-cat5: >2.5mbps
• Cable: <15mbps

I think it's gonna be easier to just run some cable to the desktop...

You should be able to get fast speeds if you have a 1000Base-T Router and 1000Base-T NICs in both computers. Even if you don't you should get 100Mbits. That translates to roughly 12.5MB/s but I doubt it'll be perfect.
