Got a call from a friend. The spkr. icon does not show in notification area, nor does she have sound when inserting a CD. My first thought is a bad sound card, but not certain. Device mgr. shows the sound card - no yellow exclamation marks. Forgot where to find the page that gave to option to "click to show spkr. in notification area".
Hard to tell what the problem is. The speaker icon is just a byproduct of the problem since she does not have audio.
Since the sound card shows the PC sound with no errors, RIGHT click on the sound entry to highlight it and then LEFT click "uninstall". DO NOT uninstall the drivers. Restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the sound. This fixes a lot of corruption problems.
