Is it possible to set the split screen feature so that the windows are a bit shorter at the bottom of the screen to accommodate the hidden dock (so as I don't keep opening it when I need to use the horizontal scroll bar) *question mark*

Sorry I mean the task bar, it's called the dock on Macs which I have been using for the past few years.

I don't think it is possible out of the box. There may be apps out there which can reserve areas of the screen but I haven't found any. It really doesn't matter where you put the taskbar. Bottom, top, left or right it gets in the way of something so I no longer autohide my taskbar.

I'll just learn to be more careful with the mouse. Is there a way to set the pages I view on Chrome so that they adjust to half screen size? Some of the fit the half size well, but others not, this is essentially the problem.

Not really. It all depends on how the page has been designed and the data on it. Some will shrink well others require scroll bars. For instance your post on SF shrinks well but mine doesn't because of my signature.
