Hi all, looking for some advice.
Now im looking at the samsung SSD drive, ive seen some pretty impressive results and am just wondering if anyone here has one of these drives and how your finding it. Do you think that the 150 pound outlay for 64 gig is worth it? and did you notice any diff in speed and bootup etc...
Thanks in advance

I don't have any experience using a SSD, but here's an article I read that might help you with your choice: Are solid state drives doomed? | The Toybox | ZDNet.com

If your making a computer for use in a car (like I am - nerd mobile =D) then SSD is the way to go, the constant vibrations won't harm a SSD.

Hi Damoh,

I definitely see a performance gain with my Patriot 64GB SSD.

You can also read more about SSD drives in this post if you like.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

The gist of the Anandtech article is that SSDs that use the JMicron controller are cheap for a reason. They have abysmal random write latency and throughput. There is a bright side -- some of the manufacturers that got lambasted by Anand have already made changes to the controller they are using and the new golden child in the low cost SSD segment is from a Korean company called Indilinx. Better sequential throughput than even the fastest Intel SSD and way better random write throughput and latency than the either first generation JMicron JMF 601 and 602 parts or the second generation 601B and 602B parts. And it just gets better, with a simple firmware upgrade they've been able to almost double random write performance on the same hardware. This is very recent data too -- like within the last week so make sure that your vendor is using the Indilinx controller AND that it has the latest firmware if you don't want to upgrade it yourself. Products using the new controller and firmware appear to be (make sure to verify):

Newegg.com - SUPER TALENT UltraDrive ME FTM32GX25H 2.5" 32GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid state disk (SSD) - Solid State Disks
and
Newegg.com - OCZ Vertex Series OCZSSD2-1VTX30G 2.5" 30GB SATA II Internal Solid state disk (SSD) - Solid State Disks

I listed the smallest/cheapest...

with the os constantly writing logs, and programs and applications writing their settings and data to "program data" and "appdata", the ssd and its pages will be filled easily and quickly. with "trim" not yet mainstream, the blocks won't be deleted until data is overwritten. the price/performance ratio will be high to put an os on the ssd, unless there is a workaround such as redirection of these folders to a spinning drive.

Brink....you're an idjit...
LOL

Barrod, that's odd as JMicron usually make pretty reliable chips, wonder what's going on there
