SSD as a D Drive

After setting up my ssd after install problems, i was know thinking of using a 128 GB SSD to store my lightroom raw files. So is the process, buy ssd, install ssd, boot windows and voila there it is in win explorer. Or would it need formatting in disk management?
In addition to this i would be keeping a sata hdd(whats in use now) as a doc store etc. So in all i would have 3 drives: a C drive SSD with windows on, a SSD with photos on and a hdd

If you wish to use an SSD for data storage, that's perfectly fine. You would physically install it in the same way as a conventional HDD (although you will need to use drive bay adapters as the drive is physically smaller). As regards formatting it before use, you may or may not need to do so (although you probably will).

Have you noticed better performance when accessing these files from your SSD vs. the HD?

The reason I ask is because we generally advise putting files on the HD to save SSD space if it's tight. How do you get better performance from these files if/when they're on an SSD?
