SSD Drives & Windows 7 Question

I just installed a new Intel X-25 160GB SSD drive in my laptop, replacing my Vista WD Hard Drive, then installed Windows 7 Ultimate on it.

Everything went well, it seems pretty fast and all, however, I noticed that Windows still had the defrag scheduled, which I cancelled.

I was under the impression that Windows 7 was "SSD Aware" and would do things differently in the background when an SSD drive was installed. Is there something I have to do to tell the O/S that I'm using an SSD?

THANKS

Hello Jon, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Windows 7 is SSD aware, but it seems to be a hit and miss with actually working completely on a drive to drive basis. I had to turn off the scheduled defrag from running on my SSD drive as well. There's nothing that can be done other than to manually check to make sure it has been turned off for the SSD. :(

I've got the 80GB Intel X25-M Gen2 in my box. I've also got a WD 1TB Caviar Black installed as well. While the scheduled defrag was still enabled on my box, it wasn't enabled for my C drive....just my other drive.

It's possible that you saw something like this. I still just disabled the scheduled defrag as I often don't delete that much from my storage drive...so fragmentation really isn't much of a concern for me. I'll just run it manually when I need it.
