Once again, the holiday season bit me with regard to computer issues. This is the 4th or 5th time a disk drive has failed on me during this season. The SSD in question is a Kingston mSATA which is no longer made and remains in the warranty coverage period. However, my concern is with obtaining as much of the information of the drive as is possible. I see references to several free software tools for this purpose but I have to take the position that these are superficial tools and are not likely to be be useful.

I removed the SSD from the laptop and placed it in an external drive housing to see if it could be accessed by connection to a working laptop USB port but this effort was unsuccessful.

I should add that the disk drive activity LED on the laptop this drive has been installed in does not light up. This tells me the SSD does not power up.

Please let me know what my best course of action is likely to be.

Edit - More thorough/correct evaluation indicates the laptop housing the Kingston drive is not sending the power to the SSD. I located the original Hitachi SSD and installed it into the mSATA external drive and connected this to a different USB port on my X201. I have been able to access the original Hitachi SSD data as well as that on the Kingston by using this different USB port.

Okay, I'm not sure what the problem is but since you stated that you have been able to access the data on the Kingston by using a different USB port there's a good chance that you're having "other" hardware issues. That aside, you should be able to strip all the data that you value off that Kingston drive and store it on a separate drive. Or, simply copy it all onto a separate drive before you proceed to make any potential repairs. You mentioned that this issue has been happening numerous times so there is a good chance the problem may be elsewhere and perhaps your Kingston mSATA drive is fine. (There's also a good chance that those other drives are just fine as well.)

NOT ENOUGH ROOM TO LIST ALL HARD DRIVES HERE. Cuts me off at 5. Did you know that if you run a network you can scan your PC for viruses via other PCs using several different virus scanners? No virus scanner gets it all. This is narrows down the window for contracting a virus. By using multiple operating systems you can use different virus scanners with no risk of conflict.
