Can I install an SSD drive for a laptop in a PC?

What should I look for characteristics for an SSD.

Is there some model that are not recommendable or more solid one?

Sure, most LT's use a 2.5" SATA drive. You have a large selection of SSD's to choose from. I think most agree the Samsung 840 Pro is among the best. There are many lower cost SSD's, around .50 cents a GB that will get the job done.

Any current generation SSD is fine. Some of the older models have firmware issues. Personalty I use Samsung and OCZ SSD's.

The only SSD's I have seen are all 2.5" so they are made for either Laptop or Desktop. In the Desktop you need a backet so it fits in the 3.5" bays. I agree about the OCZ's. I have one and it has been flawless. Others are good. Just don't get the cheapest you see unless you know the brand. Newegg has some good deals now. SSD, Solid State Drives - Newegg.com

it will be hard finding an ocz one though since they went bankrupt. they have had all their assets perchased by HP so they should be back soon.

I have an OCZ vertex drive in my macbook, its very good and reliable. I am a bit of a corsair brand slag, so I have corsair SSDs in my gaming rig, they perform very solidly, and have very fast random write and read speeds.

about the cheapest ones you can get are scandisk drives. im eyeing myself up a couple of 250gb varients as theyre only £109 a pop at the moment

badger906 -- I had not heard that. Too bad, they made a good SSD. Do you know if they will retain the OCZ name through HP or not?

As I recall, OCZ has been bought out by Toshiba (thank God it wasn't HP!) and Toshiba plans on keeping the OCZ name.

Either the Samsung 840 Pro or 840 EVO would be excellent choices (the Pro being the best).

I own SSDs of 5 different makes - two as old as from 2007. I never had any real problems. My advice would be to buy the cheapest available today. Tomorrow they will be cheaper anyhow..

They practically all come in 2.5". Most come with a 3.5" bracket but I don't even bother with that. I use Velcro dots to fix them in the 3.5" bays.

Sorry for the miss information, i stand corrected on the HP/Toshiba front. I briefly read it in a blog a few weeks ago before the news became "public" and noticed theyd got it wrong when it hit the press.. but ic ouldnt remember which way around it way ^_^

Toshiba has also purchased the Power Pc brand, so OCZ power supplies should also return to.

Amazon has 35 pages of OCZ products listed for sale. I just had a pair of Vector ssd's delivered 2 days ago. OCZ is now owned by Toshiba but is going to continue to operate independently.
