Hello all, I hope you are having a good day and thanks in advance for looking and potentially helping me with my problem.

I have a laptop, Lenovo Y580, that came with an HDD only and no SSD. I Installed an SSD in the optical drive and have been using windows 8 on it for a while.
I wanted to go back to Windows 7 So I used the Windows 7 USB DVD Download tool to put the Windows 7 ISO onto a USB. After some research I;

1. Switched off UEFI and switched on Legacy Support (Or I would not have been able to see it as an option to boot using Win 8's Advance Startup)
2. I attempted booting using Advance Startup however there was an error when attempting to install on the SSD:
"windows cannot be installed on this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style."

3. After searching up what to do I decided to delete the drive and "create" a new one and formatting it
3a. I also used diskpart to do this as well

4. However now it shows error 0x80300024 when trying to install

5. Solutions to this problem are

a) Remove all other drives, my other HDD - which I cannot do because I am on a laptop
b) Use Lenovo's RapidTool.exe which I am not totally familiar with but from what I know it formats and reinstalls the current drive. This would be fine if I did not format my SSD and I ran rapidtool.exe on there.

6. I used the HDD to backup my stuff from the SSD so I would not like to wipe it unless I absolutely have to.

I am stuck in a rut and would appreciate any help getting me out of it, I miss my 7

Much love ya'll!

dny2slo welcome to SevenForums

You don't want to remove the HDD ? Its on the bottom of the laptop and just has one screw . When you're installing Windows 7 to an SSD you would want just one drive installed .

If you decide to remove the SSD drive remove the battery first .

When you used DISKPART did you use these commands below ?

Code:
[hl]
DISKPART
LIST DISK
SELECT DISK #
CLEAN
CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY
SELECT PARTITION 1
ACTIVE
FORMAT FS=NTFS QUICK
ASSIGN
EXIT
EXIT
[/hl]

   Note

# is the number of the hard drive . Disk 0 is the first hard drive .
Assign command assigns a drive letter if you want to assign a letter yourself type in this command ASSIGN LETTER=[input letter here ] without the brackets

I have to go to jury duty , so let me answer your questions before I read those threads.

1. Would I be able to remove the HDD while I'm in the windows 7 USB boot screen(The one where you put language, date, and US keyboard and click "Install Now")? If so then that would be great and then my problem will be solved!

2. Yes I followed the exact commands in diskpart.

Thanks, for the reply VistaKing, when I come back home I'll read those two threads.

You want to remove to hard drive when the laptop is off . Removing any internal device you want it to be off and have the battery out of the laptop

Sometimes its easier to disable the HD in BIOS setup.

In addition reset BIOS to defaults, then make sure you have Legacy BIOS enabled, Secure Boot turned off, and any Compatibility Support Module enabled.

Then you'll need to delete all partitions during install to keep from getting the error. If that fails access the Repair console on second installer screen to open a Command Prompt to run the commands in Step 2 of SSD - HDD Optimize for Windows Reinstallation.

Hello all, and thank you for all your help.

What I did was remove my HDD physically.

..however, I was hesitant to do this initially because there was no USB boot option from the Boot options list. I could only get to it by actually starting up the OS on the HDD and using Window 8's Advance Restart. However the problem was that my USB was in the USB 3.0 slot and putting it in the 2.0 slot allowed it to show up as a boot option and so therefore I just removed my HDD and boot from the USB, installation went well.

Whoever else has the same problem, try putting the USB in a different slot. For the Lenovo Y580, choose one of the USB slots on the LEFT side of the laptop.

Thank you guys once again, this is a great internet resource.
