In principle yes. But not so if he installed into a predefined partition. It never hurts to check.

A very large portion free space is being tied up with hiberfile, as well as PF.



Delete the hiberfile. Thats 16Gb of space right there.

To save more space, you could probably even lower the PF to 4GB min and max, but do not disable it.

This may be all thats wrong.

And just to clarify. I was doing the diskpart clean from the OS, and it doesn't ALLOW you to format a drive while you're on it.

I tried the hiberfile and that's when it gave me the compress issue and wouldn't let me on the drive.

I'll try it again.

And if you followed the procedure given in the links, you would not be doing a format that way. Read the procedures. Follow the procedures and you will no problems.

Since SSDs tend to perform at their best when the operating system’s  partitions are created with the SSD’s alignment needs in mind, all of  the partition-creating tools in Windows 7 place newly created partitions  with the appropriate alignment.

Hey, so what I did was create a partition with 32 gigs on it and installed the os, and it installed fine. It had taken up the whole amount I allocated for that partition and left me with the rest.


I then ran powercfg and it had brang it down to 17.

The reason why I was confused before, was because I ran powercfg and the other command you stated. I restarted and it gave me that compression error. Which I hadn't done anything else for that to happen?

Apparently it is the hibernation though.

I wiped the drive, once again and I'm installing the os on the full partition. I'll get rid of the hibernation and let you know. So far so good though.


Thanks alot for your help, and no offense but i stated that I successfully ran the diskpart and found it kind of annoying that you were telling me to do it again when that obviously wasn't the problem after a successful format.

... i did follow the procedure in the links. That procedure is NOTHING new to me, I've done it a hundred times before.

I used to format computers and install xp / vista for a living with geeksquad.

Also, in regards to the page file. Wouldn't I want it having more allocated?

Can you post some links for me to read up on pagefile? I'm vaguely familiar with it. I know how to do it, but don't fully understand it.

I'm running an audio application that requires heavy workloads off my SSD. Should I be allocating my pagefile to a higher spec?

You didn't pay attention to the tutorial or you would know the clean all or the clean command can't be run from within Windows to a "System" HDD / SSD it has to be booted to.

DISKPART : At PC Startup

All you had to do after the clean all, use diskpart to create and format a single 20GB partition Step Two #2 to do the install to, then extend the Windows C: partition into the unallocated space on the SSD after the install completes and that would solve the 'size' issue.

And if you were paying attention to what I said. It was giving me the compression error when trying to boot to the drive. So I had to hook it up on another functioning machine and wipe it from there. It still worked the same...

Hey, back once again to try and fix the same problem.

Bought a brand new packaged 120ssd, installed 7 ultimate.
Showing 30 gb full.


powercfg OFF this time, and it's still the same.
The problem isn't the drive needing to be wiped of data as all the people thought before. But what's taking up 30 gigs in a fresh 7 install???

Tried looking at all the properties of the drive and it's not showing anything abnormal.

Any suggestions?

Run WinDirStat. It will tell you what is on the disk. 30GB for a fresh inszall is rather steep.

How much ram do you have in your system? It's probable that the swap file is excessively large, and could be turned of to save space. Additionally disabling hibernation and deleting the hotfix/office installer could save additional space, personally I use a diskmax (DiskMax * Disk Cleanup and Windows Performance Optimization - Software - Koshy John) ccleaner (Redirecting...) solutions to clean off the fresh install junk that seems to accumulate after running thought windows updates, but to each his own.
