SSD Hard Drive and TRIM

I'm just learning about SSD hard drives and decieded to get one at amazon.com which is: OCZ Technology 60 GB Vertex 3 Series SATA III - Windows 7 supports TRIM and I guess this drive supports it also. Before I send off for it I thought I would post first to see if I'm missing anything before I spend a hundred buck?

TRIM is a Windows feature, not part of the drive itself. The drive itself has what's called Garbage Collection, that's firmware based. (But yes, the drive does support TRIM)

However, The OCZ Vertex 3 (and other drives using the new sandforce controller) have been a little 'problematic' lately. Lots of Blue Screens etc. Conversely, some people have had no problems at all. It's lick of the draw deal.

For reliability, the Crucial and Intel drives can't be beaten.

Although I have three OCZs and only one Crucial, I would vote for the Crucial too. And I would buy from Newegg. If you ever have problems, you can RMA it - no questions asked. Plus you pay no sales tax - Except Cal and Tn I think.

I'd take the Intel 320 or the Crucial M4 over the Corsair.

They are all plenty fast enough. It's very unlikely you would be able to tell the difference between them.

You try to pick the one that has the lowest chance of causing you any headaches.

That's very difficult to do authoritatively and you will hear complaints and compliments about all of them.

Is it the OCZ's that are recommended to be left idling an hour or so a week for "Garbage Collection"?? That alone would put me off.

Once you get your drive, make sure the SATA controller is set to AHCI. If so, TRIM will be activated automatically.

Yeah, I'm an Intel fan over here. Got an X25M-G2 at home, and we have about a dozen 320's now at work...including the laptop that I am using at present.

I'd rather have a drive with a sandforce driver than a marvel. I heard no end of bad things about marvel drives when it came to getting my SSD, as well as ocz's drives had their own issues. That's why I went for corsair.

I have since bought an ocz drive for my macbook, and had no issue at all with that wither

I love the sandforce controllers on paper, but when it comes to failures, issues, problems, etc....there is certainly a lot more sandforce issues than anything else. Perhaps it's only because there are so many sandforce controllers sold...but either way....it concerns me.

My Intel might not be tops on the benchmark charts, and is always behind a sandforce controller, but it terms of reliability and overall return rate...I think the Intel is very hard to beat.

I have only two Gen1 80GB Intels that are quite old. But they never gave me any problems. But the last one I bought was a Crucial M4 because the reviews were so good.

Agreed.
They just work as advertised without needing any special attention or maintenence, even over the long term.


I have a 320 series 80Gb and a X25 40GB Intel SSD, and am very happy with them.
IMO, when it comes to a SSD, stability and Durability wins over outright speed.


That 80 320 series Intel is a very good drive. I would certainly recommend it.

I have an Intel X25, a vertex2 and 2 crucial M4s. If I buy another it would be the crucial M4. You can't beat them for the price and what they do. I've had to RMA the Vertex and the Intel but never had a problem with the Crucials. Whatever you decide, go to someplace like newegg and read the feedback on the ones you are considering. It will help you make a more informed decision.

I have to sit back and chuckle when I see discussions over SSD performance. I don't recall these discussions for different speeds of RAM.

I agree that, for me, reliability trumps performance. I won't be video editing or doing anything that requires a 6 GB/s channel. Hence, if I go SSD, Intel 320 it will be.

m4 here too - great drive, very reliable, no issues and very fast. I would stay away from the Sandforce. I have an earlier model Sandforce too and its write performance isn't very good because of write-throttling these controllers do, let alone all the issues with the latest Sandforce controller.

As mentioned, configure the BIOS for AHCI mode and format it with Windows 7 and it will automatically be properly aligned and TRIM enabled.
