Solved SSD's and moving my temp folders

I was reading about certain tweaks for SSD's and the one I am not sure about is whether I should move the default location for my temp files to a separate hard drive, or Data drive. Does anyone else have any ideas on this? I don't understand how I would be able to move the top 2 User Variables from %user profile%\appdata\local\temp to a non system drive like my D:\ drive which is a secondary hard drive that I installed in the second bay that I have on the bottom of my laptop. The bottom 2 are system variables also but don't have appdata in front. They are just C:\Windows\Temp so they don't seem as impossible to move to the data drive. Is this the right thing to do if I am running an SSD as my primary hard drive? What is worth tweaking for my SSD and what isn't but right now this one concerns me the most.

I would not temper with the OS only because it is running from a SSD. There is no logical reason for that.

I run 6 systems from SSDs and never changed anything in the OS (except deleting the hiberfile that I don't need). The oldest system (Vista) runs since 2008 like that.

I hear you but when you go through so much reading on SSD's you get pretty much the same answers about these tweaks. I hear what you are saying about yours and letting the status quo rule, but I will leave you with a link to look at, you sound like an intelligent guy as far as cyber tech goes and dealing with these forums so if you would this link is short. I too read all that stuff when I bought my new box in May and decided to implement most of the tweaks. Here is what I did -

SSD tweaks

Reduce page file for C to 1GB - Set to initial 1024, max 1536 7/5/14
Disable superfetch - Disabled 7/5/14
Event logging - Applied Win 7 Forum tutorial 7/5/14
Enable write caching - Was already set
Change location of system Temp files - Moved to D:\TEMP 15/5
Change location of IE Temp files - Not necessary, don't use it
Change location of FF Temp files - Moved to D:\TEMP\Firefox 16/5
Change location of pagefile.sys - Moved to D: 25/6

What has really pleased me is that my Windows partition on the SSD was 39GB used after I had completed my setup and software installs in early May and it hasn't grown at all since then, today it's 38.6GB. This is the first ever Win install I've had that hasn't, unlike me, had an ever expanding waistline Win 7 itself has performed faultlessly throughout.

I know it's not very scientific but if I was setting up an SSD today I would definitely do the same again.

I have seen these smart points many times. They are from the SSD middle ages when people thought that write operations could impact the lifetime of your SSD.

Fact is though that modern SSDs can sustain such a large number of write operations that you had to become 100 years old before you would see a real degradation.

Bottom line - just ignore these points that are probably well meant but based on the wrong assumptions.

I understand most of what you wrote there except for like the 15/5 and the 25/6. My data drive is also labelled D:\ but I use Chrome instead of FF and don't I move all 4 of those System and User variables. The one thing I don't get those either is they are coming from %userprofile%\appdata\local\temp, 2 of them anyway and it's okay to just move them to D:\Temp and they'll be ok? I left the paging file at 1gb for C and system managed on the data drive. Let me know what he numbers I asked about mean, please.

My Corsair is only a year old and it's like 220gb maxes out at 203. Does that sound right? and the little one in my 15" Acer laptop is only like 110gb max and it's like 6 months old, so you would classify those as newer and leave alone. I haven't had any problems leaving status quo but after all the reading I thought I would ask.

To sort those numbers you have to tell me what the nums were on the sales flyer (which are decimal numbers) and what you see in the system - e.g. in Computer (which are binary numbers - a 7% difference)/

It has no effect at all on Win 7 as it still knows where to find them.

Obviously there is a strong body of opinion saying don't bother with any of this. All I can say is it certainly doesn't adversely affect your system in any way. At worst it's neutral and possibly it's beneficial.

I think I'll just leave what I got as is. It's simple enough to change the temp files if I really need to. I still have lots of space. Thanks for the help.

One other thing to remember. Anything you move off the SSD will slow the computer down each time that data or program is needed, defeating the purpose of having a SSD in the first place.

Smart decision. I would remove the hiberfile if you don't use hibernation. The command is: powercfg -h off
