SSDs are fast, but do they last?

One thing people must remember is that SSD's are fairly new to say the least and 10 years down the road I'm sure the price will have dropped significantly and the size of them increase as well to catch the eye of users who are now opposed to the ideas of owing one and trying them. Just give them time HDD's were once pretty expensive as well for what you got.

Quite true. You can now buy a drive with twice the read/write speed as the one I bought only a year ago for the same price.

Yeah I paid $221 dollars (US) for a Western Digital 4.3gig hard drive in 1998. Compare to last yeah when I paid $109 dollars for a "high performance" 1TB Western Digital Caviar Black (SATA 6) hard drive.

8 months ago I paid $235 dollars for a 120gig OCZ vertex 2 SSD drive that was on "sale". That same drive today at Newegg is $185. That's a 50+ buck decrease in 8 months. Now you can get a better drive (Vertex 3) for about the same ($254) price of my 8 month old drive.

So yeah, comparatively prices are slowly creeping down as technology gets better, but not fast enough in my opinion.

On a personal level I wouldn't get anything less than a 120Gig drive, even for the OS; that's me though.

It's already dropped significantly. When i started looking at 80GB intels, they were $500. I bought mine when it hit $289. Now they are about $160 for the 320 series. That's all within the last 2 years.

I don't want to even think about what I paid for my 1st SSD. A 32GB Intel E-Series SLC.

I bought a Intel 510 SSD 120 Gig last march just because I wanted one. Yes the speed is great and so is the cost. Faster CPU'S and Ram cost more than slower ones. That is just the way it is. I have no idea how long it will last but I will find out. The reason I chose Intel is because of the good luck I have had with their products in the past. If for what ever reason someone doesn't want one, that's fine with me.
