SSD??

My SSD is about a year old. It's 120g that I installed win7 64 bit onto. After the initial format I couldn't install win7 until I set it up in a raid configuration. It still displays in the startup screen as two 55g drives.
Not sure why I'm saying this here. It just doesn't feel stable, sometimes windows doesn't load and blue screens every day.

The RevoDrive is basically two SSDs in RAID on a PCIe card, so it's not surprising that it shows up as a RAID drive.

SSD prices on current models are starting to drop as new versions will be out soon. OCZ has just released its Vertex 4 drives. Other vendors will follow as they refine their products. New technology is always fun and that's one of the reasons I build my own PCs.

8 Years in this decade for technology is almost a Geological time period.

By 2020 the whole infrastructure of computing might be different -- for example a simple phone could act as a "Holographic projector" where the computer image was just beamed to say a desk or a table and you typed or did all your computer actions on the "Virtual" table.

No moving parts -- 3-D if you like and storage almost unlimited.

To provide this type of service will require an INORDINATE amount of compute power but it will come.

8 years off is HUGE in computer technology.

The only certainty is that Gartner if it's still around will still be 50% right -- same percentage you get as by Random Guessing.

For those on the fence, you may want to consider this:

1) How many people who currently have an SSD would not want to give it up?
2) How many people who currently have an SSD regret it?
3) How many people who do not have an SSD want one?
4) How many people who do not have an SSD have no plans to ever get one?

Compare the ratio of item 1 to item 2, then the ratio of item 3 to item 4. Then draw your own conclusion.

Well I am a #1 Prof but also consider
1. Those whose first experience with one have had no probs.
2. Those who have had duds and probs plus probably can't afford to replace it.
3. Those who just cannot afford one.
4. Those who are quite happy with the wait - I have just been given a quad core machine with a 3Gbs HDD that with a bit of housekeeping is only 25 secs behind my Sandy bridge build with Crucial M4 - go to whoa.

Myself I like them and am putting one in one very slow Toshiba laptop as soon as I can.

I also like jimbo like advancing technology and like the SSD type clip in device - MSATA for helping out the HDD's performance (Gigabyte boards) .

I seem to fit into both the #3 and #4 options for the most part waiting for one of the few brands I would buy to come down in prices even further as well as not having any plans for one on the present build. If anything I would be upping the storage/backups drives from 1tb to either 2tb or 3tb models as the last expense.

Kingston, OCZ right at this time are the only two reliable brands I see producing them since a few other brands wouldn't cut it to start with whenever going to look over any newer drives out. In past years people questioned why I didn't rush at 160gb Raptor drives when going with a larger 250gb ide drive on the old builds.

There were no 1tb drives available for storage which could have seen the smaller performer dropped in as the OS drive. With the last build a 500b drive was removed from the external housing as additional test drive for 7 but found to be the Green Power series not good for OSing.

Between all that keeping the next version in mind then as well as VMs and other things requiring drive space this build was to see four 1tb drives replace the four 500gb total eventually to be seen in the last build. The next build will likely be seeing a good sized SSD for the host/OS drive while keeping in mind either even larger storage drives or a larger external enclosure possibly a home server case. That would handle some of the larger system images seen lately! :roflmao:

Good concept but where are the numbers. Can't do a comparison unless you can get a survey of a representable number of people.

I'd buy a new SSD tomorrow, If I could get 1 TB SSD for the same price as a 1 TB HDD.

I don't see that happening for many years (unless Thailand gets flooded out again, in a few weeks time).

Yes but you don't NEED a 1 TB SSD to get 90% of the benefit of having one. At least not in any machine that can have more than one drive... In fact SSDs may /never/ catch up to spinners in $$/GB. But that doesn't mean that they aren't insanely useful and can;t speed 90% of your daily operations up by 1000%!!!

And it is true that 99% of everyone poo-pooing SSDs are people that have never tried one and seen for themselves what a jaw dropping difference even a 120Gig can make on your system..

I have two parallel Windows 7 installations, one on an SSD and the other on an HDD. With prefetching and other types of caching, the difference isn't really that great. It boots faster, but I only boot/restart once every few days. Apps only start faster the first time, because then they're cached for subsequent launches anyway.

Well when the difference between launching Photoshop after a boot is 20 seconds or 1.5 seconds. And when loading screens on games are so short you can;t even read the little hints they use to try to suck up time till the next level loads. The difference is night and day. Even more so for a laptop since those drives are so poor to start with.

But yeah if you only use a set number of programs and you leave your machine on 24/7 I conceed that it may not make any difference. In every other case, it's nothing less than astonishing.

Good point! Newer technologies always start off by keeping the price tags high to begin with. As for surveys they tend to be limited and not always the best way to compare.

Over time when moving through ide to Sata II and then comparing 7 on a Sata 3 drive at first before needing a reinstall when swapping brands of memory out despite the faster bus speeds there the difference wasn't noticable with the exact same apps on.

Now if OCZ or another better brand had had a 1tb SSD when planning this case out for what was paid out for a WD Black ed. Sata 3 drive I would have likely given it a go. But when simply seeing a 120gb going for the same or more then it was something to consider for the next build.

Certain usage scenarios won't have an advantage with a SSD. The majority of users will have a very noticeable increase in performance.

A 1TB SSD is not necessary, unless SSD and HDD price per GB is the same then why not, I don't think the price per GB will ever be same for both drive types.

The best way to go is have a SSD large enough for your OS and all your apps, this will yield the best performance per dollar.
Store all your data, pics, videos, movies, everything on a HDD.
I have been using a separate partition or HDD for data for about 20 years, the advantage is that if the OS needs upgraded or re-installed all your data is safe. This can be easily done by several methods.
Everyone has their own preferred methods for storage, if having one drive for everything is a requirement then, of coarse, a SSD is not viable.

The vast majority of people that were initially hesitant or against buying a SSD have the same reaction after getting their first one. 'WOW, a truly impressive performance increase' and 'I should have got one of these sooner'.
