SSD's intrigue the hell out of me. i just read this article The SSD Anthology: Understanding SSDs and New Drives from OCZ - AnandTech :: Your Source for Hardware Analysis and News and now im not so sure I want to get one.

i would use it for my OS and programs only, i already have a 1TB drive for data

what are some of the best ssds out today? The intel X-25M sounds nice... but how does it compare to the oCZ vertex 2's and other drives?

have any of the problems from that article been solved now? That article was from march '09

The Intel X25-M's are great drives and the new $120GB for around $240 is a good deal. Aside from those, the Vertex 2's are great and so is just about anything with the new Sandforce controllers.

I think most of the kinks have been worked out now and have experienced no problems whatsoever with my Intel X25 M.

that drive doesnt have a sandforce controller, right?

Correct, the Intel drives do not use Sandforce controllers.

Here are some cheaper option which would suffice for the OS:

I use both Intel and Vertex and do not really notice any difference.

I think you will get the full benefit. The loading of the games will be "HDD style", but that should not be a problem. If you have a game that pulls a lot of stuff from the disk during the game, you might want to put that one on the SSD. Also, if the 1TB and the 250GB HDDs are of the same speed (same rpm) I would put the games on the smaller disk - it is faster. Plus, the 1TB disks seem to often make trouble (at least that's what I gather from all the reports that people post).

I don't think I have read a bad word about the vertex 2 , seems to be a good bit of kit and not a bad price now.

I went for a Corsair F60 as my introduction to the world of Solid state drives , and it does its job well.

I have all my older games on a regular drive and usually keep my latest 2 or 3 games on the SSD.

The thing I love the most is the power on time , got used to it now, about 20 seconds from hitting the "On" button and I am surfing the net.

About 16GBs - figure 20GB with a good selection of downloaded programs (no games).

My Crucial Real SSD is amazing and what a steal at $135.00 for a 64gb Sata III drive. I'm sure there going for even less now, WEI 7.7 !

I'll be getting a Patriot Inferno SSD. What you'll notice are the little things - explorer loads virtually instantly and everything feels smoother.

I have two of the Vertex 2, 120GB and they are sweet. I put the Corsair Force 120 in the wifes system and she is tickled to death with its performance. I slapped a Kingston VNow 64GB in my netbook and it really made a difference there.

I have only had one SSD take a crap on me and that was one of the original Vertex 128GB with the indlilnix controller and I swear by the OCZ support. I requested an RMA and the next day they emailed me the RMA number and shipping directions; sent the drive in and 4 days later got the email saying they are replacing the drive. 5 days later a brand new drive arrived at my front door which was shipped from Tiawan.

For that reason alone I will stick with OCZ for SSDs and go with their SandForce controlled drives only.

barely containing my excitement, i've just ordered a 60 gig ocz vertex 2e - should be arriving tomorrow!

i was looking at the intel x-25v, but 40 gigs just seemed way too small for my gaming needs - the ocz was only £20 more expensive, for 20 more gigs.

couldn't quite stretch to the 80 gig intel - that was £45 more than the ocz, for those extra 20 gigs.

Must be the season for SSD. Been researching them myself and opted for a 120 Gb OCZ Vertex2 E series.
This will be for OS and programs. Data will go to a 1 Tb WD black HDD.
Can't wait to put it together, especially as it will be a brand new build comp as a Christmas pressie for the Handbrake.
