Solved Standard account has problems running program

Hi everyone,

I purchased RightNote to use for school notes mainly because it is easy to switch between notes. It works fine when I run it as administrator. It was able to load the dictionary it needs and the many short-cuts. When I run it as standard user, I can open and take notes but the dictionary is not loaded nor any of the short cuts.

I went to the RightNote directory and gave it full permission, but still the results are the same. I was wondering that since I installed it as admin (for most other software as well), that it creates paths for the admin account only. If that is the case, how do I remove all the registry information so I can reinstall it anew? (by the way, I uninstall and reinstall many times without any resolution so I'm curious if the registry is the culprit).

It sounds like the program needs to "Run as administrator" to be able to run properly.

If you like, you might see if using the tutorial below to create an elevated shortcut of this program that standard users can use to run the program as administrator without getting an UAC.

Thanks for your reply Shawn. I prefer to not run the program elevated as admin if I can help it. I could not enter accented characters from a third party program into RightNote when I run it elevated. I have another computer where the exact same program works flawlessly under a standard account.

I did install the program initially on my main computer as a trial and upgrade it via the purchase of a license key though. But uninstalling it and reinstalling it did not solve the problem. I also went through the registry and delete all references to RightNote, and also manually remove the RightNote directory from Program files after uninstalling and before reinstalling.

I guessed I can live without some features as with the standard account, not all features work (dictionaries, custom icons, custom short-cuts, etc.) but the core of the program works... that is unless I can find a solution.

You might check the program's website for any updates that may help, and/or contact the program developer to make them aware of this issue for them to hopefully come out with an update to fix it.

That's a good idea. Unfortunately, I emailed the developer for support and have not heard from him. I will try again.

I got a solution from the developer. Apparently, it is a bug in the program that if you install the program as one user [administrator account] and using the program as another user [standard account], the necessary files that are created during installation in the profile of the installer does not get propagated to any other user. The solution is to manually copy the files generated from the profile of the installer to any other accounts on the system that will use the software.

I always use a standard account on my computer for security reasons so ran into this problem. The majority of people whose main account is an admin account will not have this problem.
