Hey guys I know the difference between sleep and hibernate but whats the differance between sleep and standby?

I usually put my computer into sleep but I just downloaded a desktop widget that I really like that lets me put my computer into "stand by", "shut down", "restart", "hibernate" or "log off" but not sleep so I was just wondering if theres a difference between pressing stand by on the widget or pressing sleep once I hit the arrow next to shutdown on the bottom left? I tried putting it in standby and it seemed to do pretty much the same thing as sleep but the little crescent moon symbol on my Lenovo didn't light up so I'm not sure...

thanks...

When I used XPsp3 on my 2004 DELL, they called it Standby. Now I have a WIN7 2011 DELL and it's called Sleep. Either way the same thing happens.
