Hi, I was trying to play starcraft on my toshiba laptop with windows 7 SP1 but the game crashed upon launch and at the part where the blizzard cinematic should appear(instead its just a cloud of pixels on the screen and then the game crashes).

The games work fine on my other computers vista and xp, and I got starcraft 2 working without any problem on windows 7. I tried launching in compatiblity mode, using text edit and the mudlord patch but none of them worked. Any ideas ?

Thanks for your answers

Hi there :)

Right click on the starcraft.exe in \Program Files\Starcraft. Go to the compatibility tab in properties and tick every box under settings: All of these relate to graphics so tick em all! Do not tick run in compatibility mode though cause then sc won't run can't find a font file somewhere

I did all that already, and it still won't work :( I get an error message saying that some memory cannot be written though.

Creating a duplicate thread would be bending the rules as well. If no one answers, it means no one has any suggestions.

I have virtualized XP in the past to play some old games. StarCraft is well below what would be considered "too intensive" for a VM.

You install it like any other program, and then use a disc or .iso file of Windows XP, for example, to create a virtual computer. It will boot from the CD or file once you set some options, like how much memory to dedicate to the VM (I use 1 GB for XP), and then it installs just like XP always installed...just in a window while your Windows 7 OS is running.

Before we get into any more details, what version of Windows 7 do you have installed?

I use windows 7 home edition Premium with service pack 1, but I don't know if it's 32 or 64 bit

Push the Windows key + Pause Break.

Will tell whether you're on 32 or 64-bit.

If you have a Program Files (x86) folder, that also means you're on 64-bit.

I just checked my Data Execution Prevention list. Didn't need to add it in there.

StarCraft Brood War runs fine for loooong times and online as well.

I've had original StarCraft since its very own year, 1998. I had to go to Battle.net. Gave it my original CDKEY for a longer Game Key. Then it offers you the BW expansion.

YET, despite the 1.22 gig wait, there is still an official manual update that should be worth the shot. I had to install it, as well as my bud.

So just get the BW one only. Under Expansion.

G'luck.

Alright then its the 64-bit version :) I have both games installed, the game just won't launch properly and crashes.

edit: wow im stupid, it was written under my username.

That's odd. Well installing BW for me is just like installing INTO SC1. You choose either original or expansion in the in-game menus

Try the update patch then, just the expansion one that I linked in my post before..hopefully it will remedy the crashing

Data Execution Prevention. Try that.

0nly way I know how to access that is opening Start, typing "advanced system", then "View advanced system settings"

Click Advanced tab, click first Settings button under Performance, Data Execution Prevention tab, add the StarCraft(s) executable Apply 0K and see if that will solve

Nothing appears when I type advanced system :/

edit: I found it in the computer properties. I tried to add Starcraft.exe but I had an error message that I can't deactivate the execution for this program. I checked the option "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select". Is this what I was supposed to do ?

Yeh that's the option I use

I wonder how's the other option though. I wish DEP just didn't exist

I guess I'll have to go with the virtual machine thing..

It works fine for me for many purposes. I can't imagine dual booting or not using VMs anymore.

What version of Windows 7 are you running? If it is Pro or higher, you can download and install XP Mode, and the VM will be created for you. If you have Home Premium or lower, you'll need VirtualBox, which is also free. Post back which version, and we'll go from there.
