Start Menu doesn't honor folder shortcuts?

Under previous Classic Start Menus for XP Pro and NT, a Shortcut of a Folder on a UNC path would display it's contents as though it was a folder when the mouse hovered over it.

Under the "forced" new Start Menu in Windows 7, a Shortcut to a Folder on a UNC path doesn't display it's contents when hovered upon--you have to click the shortcut/folder. But under 7's Start Menu, shortcuts do not display their contents--they display a file named "target".

Is there any way to change this so that the contents of the folder shorcuts work as they did in the XP Start menu? Not being able to explore folder shortcuts in the start menu is crippling for us....

I have explored Junctions, but they do not work properly with UNC filepaths (you can create them, but not explore them).

The symbolic link appears to work correctly, thanks.
Time to send shortcuts into the "won't work properly with UNC" pile with junctions.
