Right click on the orb for the Start Menu and choose Properties. Click on the Start Menu tab and there are a couple of options that will allow you to view/not view recently used programs in the Start Menu and the Task Bar. Uncheck what you don't want.

Set the properties from right click start menu to not remember anything, then set it back. I had this happen during beta, cleared it up.

Right click with the mouse on this icon you want to remove. You will see the falling menu with options. Choose 'Remove from this list' option and this is it.

Start Menu Icons Can't Be Removed, solved
Sorry for posting in such an old thread.
Found this issue on my fathers computer recently and had to register to answer the thread.
Right click the startbutton -> choose properties ->
On Start Menu tab, choose Customize > check "Enable Context Menus and dragging and dropping". Click Ok then "Apply" > OK
Think this solves the issue.
Kind regards,
Damas
