Start menu issue

Can anyone help here please: Since updating my Win7 x64 I find that many of my programs will not open via the Start Menu, although they will open via the desktop. Is there any way to refresh or repair the Start Menu without re-associating every shortcut on the menu?

I received the following message when I tried running the sfc scan:

Windows Resource Protection could not start the Repair Service.

Strange as I used this scan a couple of days back?

I have installed PerfectDisk 12 to optimize my SSD but surely this wouldn't mess things up would it?

I'm not sure what the program does. is it a de fragmentation tool? if so, you could use the built in de fragmentation program in windows 7.

Hello again KoolKat, I did a system restore and this allowed me to perform the sfc scan for which I am enclosing the results.

hmm . what antivirus do you use? download and install Malwarebytes : Malwarebytes Anti-Malware PRO removes malware including viruses, spyware, worms and trojans, plus it protects your computer and MSE Microsoft Security Essentials - Free Antivirus for Windows do a full scan with both and post back.

I do not recommend defraging a SSD. Windows should of been turned off defrag when you installed the SSD.

This may help. Right click on Start and pick properties/customize/set to default.
With all those problems found in System Files I would run it again 2 more times with a reboot after each time.
Have you or a program been in the registry? Programs like Tune Up or Speed Up or Repair Tools or Registry Cleaners. Reason I ask is because sfc /scannow list of repairs was quite large.

Thanks so much guys. I will answer your questions in one go if I may?

Firstly, I use Kaspersky 2012 suite which has its deffinitions up-to-date. I use 10bit Antymalware which shows all clear.

I would NEVER defrag a SSD that's why I purchased PerfectDisk as it just optimizes the SSD.

I have tried your recommendation Laid Back Bear with no success but thank you anyway I do use 10bit Advanced SystemCare 5.

IMHO 10bit Advanced SystemCare 5. can cause these kinds of problems and more. It does have a registry cleaner incorporated in the program. I that program has made change to your registry it might of saved them somewhere on your computer which would you to put them back in your registry.

I and most others don't recommend any registry cleaners. That being said I will give you reason. Windows registry is very complex thing that takes much training to understand and change. Most people including myself don't have the knowledge. Microsoft keep many things secret on how it's operating works. When using a Registry Cleaner it will change things or remove things and nobody know what it has done so it make it very difficult for people who have the needed knowledge to help you. 10bit doesn't have a very good reputation to the best I can remember.
Did you run sfc /scannow 2 more times; if so what was the result?
