Solved Start menu shortcut editing
Hello all,
Firstly I must apologise for registering and posting immediately without trawling the forum - but I have been searching the web for the last hour and cannot find the answer so feel it is not readily available - here or anywhere else. Hopefully someone knows though!
Now that is out of the way - thank you in advance for any input whatsoever..!
What I would like to do is edit the shortcut to music in the Windows 7 start menu so that it does not display the navigation pane when I run Explorer this way. I do not want to disable the navigation pane for every explorer window. Is this possible? I am guessing it is (possibly with a registry key edit) but cannot find the key to edit so cannot even start experimenting.
The reason is when I access my music this way the navigation pane displays my NAS drive and spins up the disk which I do not want to happen evey time I play a tune.
Thanks again!

Hello Fugs, and welcome to Seven Forums.
I'm sorry, but the navigation pane is a universal setting in all Windows Explorer type windows. You can either turn it off or on for all windows.

Imperfect1: not exactly - I wanted to know how to edit the Music shortcut that is already embedded into the start menu over on the right hand side - but I'm sure the information in your link will be useful to me in future so thanks again for posting.
Brink: Thanks also to you for posting; sometimes the answer is not what we want to hear, but if it saves me time trying to do something that is not possible then it is again good information.
Maybe it's best to tackle this problem from a different angle - and not show my network locations by default. I may even just turn off the Samba share on my NAS, and turn it on when I want to stream a movie.
Thanks loads for the replies guys and all the very best!

All good matey, removed networking from the navigation pane easy with those instructions and downloaded the link to networking and pinned it to my start bar. Workaround succesfully engaged - we've now extended the life of my little NAS box!
Kudos well deserved my good man!!

You are most welcome!
As a side note..I thought you might be interested to know that my DVD drive no longer appears in Explorer either
unless you have a disc in the drive.
I have checked "Hide empty drives.." and it is not selected.
It does not bother me and I shall leave it configured as such. I haven't even used the network link yet but we've already stopped the drive spinning up unnecesserily several dozen times over the last week..saving power, the environment, money and hassle...
You are entitled to enable smug mode..!

LOL, that's great news.
That is strange about the DVD drive. Is it a internal or external DVD drive? Have you restarted the computer to see if it still does this afterwards?

Yes in fact I only realised several days afterward when I went to use the drive next (it is internal.) Funny because I knew something was wrong but it just didn't twig until I had to use it!
That pretty much signifies how much it bothers me - just thought you may want to know.
In fact it's quite cool; stops me from clicking it by accident when I am looking for things and making the tray smack the inside of the door on the front of my case!!
