Earlier you assisted me in retrieving several missing Start > Power buttons. Now I noticed that when I right-click the task bar, "Start Task Manager" is shadowed out and I don't have access to it. Do you have a fix for this too?

How about letting us know what you did to precipitate this problem.

These problems don't happen on their little old lonesome.

choose a restore point for a point in time when your computer was in order and:

RESTORE TO A PREVIOUS SYSTEM RESTORE POINT
1) WIN | type SYSTEM RESTORE | ENTER | NEXT
| Choose a different restore point radio button | NEXT
2) Show more restore points checkbox (lower left)
3) Highlight the desired restore point
4) Scan for affected programs (lower right)make a note of affected programs
5) CLOSE | NEXT | FINISH

WIN = key with the wavy Microsoft flag on top.

I have no recollection as to when this may have occurred and I have 10 restore points dating back 10 days, It is also possible that this may have occurred prior to my earliest restore point. Selecting one at a time may be an exercise in futility. I looked around and there don't appear to be any other difficulties. Are there any other options?

I would prefer avoiding a complete reinstall

Hello,

I attempted a system restore to my earliest possible restore point, July 10. It failed. I got a message that something was corrupt and no changes were made. I have quite a few system backups. I restored my C: drive back to June 22 and 'Start Task Manager' was still shadowed. I can't image not having used the task manager since then. I have an alternate administrator account and when I logged into it, surprisingly 'Start Task Manager' was fine. My default profile is located on an external disk so I deduced that something in H:\Users\Richard... is corrupt that is not in C:\Users\Administrator...How can I find out which file or files are corrupt and copy them from my alternate administrator account to the one I use on a regular basis. I can easily bring back my up-to-date C: drive since my backups are also located on an external disk. The real questions is: is it possible to find the corrupt file or files that manage the Task Manager. I have 'Process Explorer' and I think it is possible to see which files are opened by a particular task, take a look at those and copy them to the other administrator account. Pretty complicated. Huh? A possible alternative would be to copy all of my installed applications from one account to another (if that is possible). A third possibility would be to reinstall the OS but I would still have to transfer the applications. What do you think?

Isn't it normal practice to share the solution in case another member of the forum happens to run into the same problem?

Which reply did you consider impolite?

Looks like that attachment is from our sister forum Vista Forums

Is that where you got your answer?

Karlsnook replied "Reinstall" only, more than once. I considered him quite rude since I put much effort into explaining my problem. I would prefer to keep my source confidential. It was not Vista Forums.

No problem, just thought it would help others in the future. :)

Where ever you got your help, it was a link from Vista Forums that you posted.

You can mark the thread solved if your issue is fixed.
