Hi,

I just reinstalled windows 7 using the Windows 7 Clean Install tutorial 3 days ago. For some reason I can't get SpeedFan to start up when my computer starts. I can go into the All Programs folders --> Startup and click the SpeedFan icon in the folder, and it fires right up. What's going on?

Hello TrunkMonkey,

This is happening because SpeedFan requires elevation to run. Elevated programs are not allowed to run at startup for security purposes.

However, you could use the tutorial as a workaround to create a task for an elevated shortcut that will run SpeedFan without getting a UAC prompt, then at step 23, use the "run at startup as a task" option to create another task to run the elevated shortcut from the first task.
Hope this helps, :)
Shawn

Ahhhh, yes, the old UAC trick. Ok, I'll give it a shot on the tutorial. Thanks!

I have followed the instructions, and while I do see the command window pop open briefly, I'm not seeing the little icon appear in the notification window. I went through it twice to make sure I was following it to a T. One thing I did notice was that your task name didn't have quotes around it, as stated in #14 (image in 14 shows the item without quotes). I have tried it both ways and it didn't seem to make any difference. The item is running in Task Manager though. I could try Maximizing it. Any ideas?

You don't want to use the minimize option since it will minimize SpeedFan to the taskbar.

This will only work for administrator accounts, and will not work in standard user accounts.

Test the shortcut created from the 1st task to make sure it's running properly.

If so, be sure to create a second task using the run at startup as a task option to create a second task to run the elevated shortcut.

The quotes are optional unless there's a space in the task's name, but I included it in the steps to be safe and more universal.

Ok I see what you meant in your first posting. I just stuck that shortcut into the Start Up folder. Back soon...

I created a task "Launch SpeedFan" to operate On Startup, action was to execute SpeedFan (the task) so I pointed the Launch Program menu to the SpeedFan task, and added in the actions box an exact duplicate of what I had done in the first task, except this time it was all about the SpeedFan task, which I moved to my User folder. Still nothing. I'm going to try removing the actions stuff...

EDIT: just noticed you included a link. You have a link for EVERYthing :D

It can be tricky with all the steps. Double check to make sure that everything was followed exactly, and that any shortcut created stays where you reference it in the second task.

I'll be here in tomorrow to further help. :)

Try to set a 30 second delay to get it to work. Worth a shot.

On the triggers tab> Advanced settings

Delay task for up to set for 30 seconds

Repeat task every set for 2 minutes

For a duration of set for 3 minutes

Put a check next to Stop all running tasks at end or repetition duration

This will apparently start a 2nd instance, then shut down the 1st allowing the settings to take hold

See if this works.

From the best I can tell, it looks like you didn't create the elevated shortcut using the tutorial below first.

That would be the 3rd screenshot, with the cmd.exe command.

.....then afterwards, use the tutorial below to create a new task to run the actual shortcut created above at startup and log on.
This part is represented in 4th screenshot. I know it's hard to tell, but one is called "SpeedFan" (tutorial #1, launches speedfan). The other is called "SpeedFan Launcher" (tutorial #2) which launches the shortcut created in #1.

I tried this but still no speedfan. I'll keep looking. What I'm after is a task which launches the shortcut which launches speedfan, correct?

You do not need to use cmd.exe or a shortcut to start Speedfan in the task scheduler.

When in the task scheduler, under the Actions tab select browse and point to the Speedfan.exe file in Program Files (x86) and add /t to the Add arguments box if you want Speedfan to open minimized.

Not normally, but he's wanting to run SpeedFan at startup. Since SpeedFan runs as an elevated program, it will not be allowed to run at startup normally unless he uses a workaround such as this.

Brink,

I have used the method I suggested to run Speedfan at startup on all my Windows 7 systems with no issues
as long as run with highest privileges is checked.
