Hey guys I am having a problem when starting up my computer with Windows 7 64 bit operating system. This problem has been on and off but it occurs like this. What happens is I will boot up my computer and I will get past the welcome screen, my desktop icons load along with my wallpaper but nothing in the lower right hand corner of the screen loads (by where the time is displayed). Then when I go to click an icon on my desktop my computer freezes just stays stuck I can't control alt delete or do anything and my cursor becomes like unusable. Sometimes one icon will load in the lower right hand corner but nothing else and same problem occurs. Recently this has been happening to me a lot more recently so I have not been shutting down my computer I have been sleeping it as I am afraid that it may not start up if I shut it down or restart. I have tried everything I can think of so far and am at a loss. I scanned for malaware, spyware, etc and nothing came up, defragged c drive that didn't help, ran sfc (system file checker) nothing came up, ran the error-checking tools on C drive to automatically fix file system errors and find and recover bad sectors and no errors came up. I feel like it may be a hard drive problem or possible operating system itself but I am not sure. My C drive is pretty fresh and doesn't have much on it because when I used to have XP I got a virus, completely reformatted the C drive and wiped everything and did a clean install of Windows 7. Any help would be appreciated not sure what to do.

Thank you

Welcome!

It almost sounds like an application problem to me. Try a Selective Startup, and disable all non-Microsoft startup entries.

I'm thinking maybe a program is malfunctioning.

Ok so I am under the start up tab, you're telling me to disable anything that doesn't say Microsoft Corporation under the manufacturer? If that's correct if I do that how do I tell if it worked keep restarting and see if I get the same error?

Thanks

Note Following this step lets Microsoft services continue to run. These services include Networking, Plug and Play, Event Logging, Error Reporting, and other services. If you disable these services, you may permanently delete all restore points. Do not do this if you want to use the System Restore utility together with existing restore points.

That was copied from the clean boot page you linked, I don't think I want my restore points to be deleted and it says if you do that you can't use system restore utility together with existing restore points.

One major benefit of this forum is that many ideas are presented. The poster can and should use his own judgement, I congratulate you for taking the responsobilty seriously.

In regards to System Restore, you are correct, temporarily you will be without the restore points, if it is turned off. You can do the clean boot with SR intact. If the problem is not corrected, you can turn off SR. Try the system, if it does or does not work, you can turn on SR and make a restore point. The decision is yours.

Good Luck

Ok thank you I'm not trying to question you or anything just making sure what's going on, but I re-read it and I realized that it doesn't mess up the restore points unless you DISABLE the microsoft services but with the clean boot it is telling you to hide all microsoft services and disable everything EXCEPT microsoft services, correct? If that is the case then it won't affect any microsoft services

Yes that is correct. Just take your time, your problem should get fixed.
