Running Win 7 Starter on the wifes netbook, I had to disable Auto Updates because it would try and install EVERYTHING.. even when Starter Edition wouldn't/didn't need. When the latest Win7 SP tried to load it really messed up, so I had to fall back.

Question is - do I need/require these WIN7 SP updates for Starter ?

Latest issue is that even with a paid copy of Office 2007, Windows Live Mail won't do spell check, but WORD will - in MAIL 2011 the Spell Check Icon is not active.

Question is - how can I get spell check to work in Windows Live Mail 2011 (build 15.4.3508.1109)

Id prefer to use the older Windows Mail 6.0, but that got wiped out in the SP Update.

Without the ability to add more Netbook memory, going to a full WIN7 is NOT an option.

For your first question when you asked if it is necessary to download all the updates. I would say that you should install what Windows describes as "Important" updates. But you don't necessarily need to install the "optional" updates. I, personally, do not like Windows to start to download updates until I want to download. But I want to be notified when updates are available. There is a setting where you can have Windows notify you when updates are available, but it will let you download them when you choose. I'm not sure about the spell check problem, but in one version, and I don't remember which, there was a bug that made it necessary to go to the setting where you would choose a language. When you get there you toggle the setting to a different language, then back to the language that you want. I'm not sure if it will work for what you are using.

What model of netbook is it? I have a Samsung and was able to upgrade it to 2GB and am running Win 7 Pro on it OK.
