Startup Error Please Help Immediately :(

There are 4 partitions seems to appear in the diskpart 1 2 3 4. Partition 1 Type-Recovery, Partition 2 Type Primary, Partition 3 Type-Primary and Partition 4 Logical. Which one should I have to activate. Btw, I there is no diagnostic tools for toshiba. My hd manufacturer is toshiba

Did you copy out the files first following tutorial given, then run the HD maker's full CD scan to try to diagnose and possibly repair HD in case that is the problem?

Next try to startup Win7 by making sure the correct partition is still marked Active. Use the Diskpart "Detail partition" command on partitions 2 and 3. Which partition is "System?" Post back details for both.

If one partition is marked System, then you can run Startup Repair up to 3 separate times with reboots, ignoring any distracting messages. Just run it repeatedly as it has several steps to take to repair/rewrite the System MBR. If it fails after 3 attempts, try also System Restore from the Recovery tools list although it is automated in Startup Repair.

I'm not able to copy files from C: because C: has only 30 mb of files and C: drive's limit is 30 mb, very strange.. I can't diagnose the problem because there's no file for toshiba hd in the site that you've given. I'll look for the correct partition because "I'm getting bootmgr is missing error". Btw, I'm using Sony Notebook and in the advanced boot menu "Repair Your Computer" isn't available for me. Many thanks for your answers..

Your WIn7 drive is obviously not C then. Browse with Repair CD to find the WIn7 partition to copy out the files. THis should be your first priority, to rescue the files. Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console

I use GWScan to diagnose/repair most all HD models. Will unzip files to C:Cabs where you can browse from ImgBurn to find ISO file to burn image to CD, run full scan. http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/search.asp?param=gwscan

Using the mini-explorer which browses for the files in link above, determine which is the Win7 HD to mark it active. Otherwise use DISKPART "Detail partition" command on partitions 2 or 3 to determine which is Win7 partition by size and placement. It will not be Recovery or Logical partition. If files are there then Win7 should be able to start if marked Active and not damaged too badly.

Do you have VAIO? There are links here to how to run Recovery partition - put in your model or serial number to read your Manual for exact steps: http://support.vaio.sony.eu/computing/vaio/flash/hub_cons.html Most VAIO's will Run Recovery during bootup by tapping F10 key repeatedly. But I would not do this until you exhaust all other steps to repair Win7 and copy out your files.

Keep in mind that you were not prepared for this if files were not backed up and Recovery Disks were not made from that Recovery Partition, which hopefully will still run.

I have to parts of hd "C:" and "D:". But somehow my Win7 and my files in "C:" is vanished. So I cannot use copy/paste method. I'll try GWScan. For the partitions, I've selected one of primary partitions and I get bootmgr is missing error. I'll try for the other and scan the hd..

There's only "C:" "D:" and "E:". None of them contains my data, I'm doing a partition recovery scan using hiren's boot cd it's been scanning for 2 hours but hasn't finished yet. I'm waiting

If that doesn't work try the Paragon Rescue app to 1) Recover Partition, then 2) Recover Data.

You will be able to look at the partitions and Explore for files.

You can also do this from the best partition manager for Win7 free Partition Wizard bootable CD, which will display the partiitions and show you which is currently marked System Active, allow you to explore for files: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/93322-partition-wizard-use-bootable-cd.html

These are more modern tools optimal for Win7.

Run the GWScan full CD scan to know for sure. It might be able to repair it.

Try also running the Recovery Partition by tapping F10 at Startup. Read your Manual at Sony's Support Downloads webpage for exact steps so you know you have made every attempt to run Recovery.

You may need to replace your HD. If your computer is under a year old, it should still be under factory warranty for parts replacement. Call Tech Support.

I know this is an old topic but I find it interesting that the exact same thing has happened to my sons Sony Vaio laptop that is only like 10 months old. Windows partition shows 0mb and not operating system, startup repair doesnt work because as far as it can tell there is no Operating System install...I am going to try some of the suggestions in this forum to see if i can recover the files....I hope I can and then i may get it sent in for a warranty repair just incase it is a faulty hard drive. But for some reason I don`t think it is.

Ya I`m going to attempt all of the steps that`s been suggested. I want to try and recover my sons file before sending it in for repair as I know I wont get the old drive back afterwords...I`ve already tried the recovery partition setting but like everything else it just hangs at the blue welcome screen for hours. Hopefully 1 of the suggestions here work as trying to download all his content again is going to kill my bandwidth(damn canadian isp capping).

Are you trying repairs from the DVD Repair console or Repair CD? If so and no installation is found when you boot in, access the Tools option open a Command line and type bootrec /fixmbr and bootrec /fixboot to try to force it to find Win7 and even if it doesn´t. run Startup Repair from the tools list anyway a few times.

If Startup Repair won't find anything to fix after repeated attempts try copying out the files this way: Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console

If it finds and copies the files for you then the installation may be reparable with a few more attempts. Post back results.

If not test the HD using makerś extended CD scan as sometimes they are reparable using that and Disk check.

If this fails, run Factory Recovery from its partition or the disks which you made or order from tech support, or find a Win7 installation disk for your version to clean reinstall with the product Key on COA sticker following the steps in my signature picture below.
