Startup Message

Hello,

A couple of days ago I connected an older HP 845c printer to my computer. The only drivers I had were from an XP disc that my friend gave me with the printer. I found windows 7 drivers from Windows Update Catalog. I installed the drivers and everything was fine.

The next morning I started up my PC and it wouldn't boot. I heard the normal beeps then the PC restarted on it own, heard the beeps again and it restarted again. After the third time I held in the power button to shut it down.

I unplugged the USB cable from the printer and started up the PC. It started fine and continued to work fine. Later that day I restarted and I was greeted with this message.

"1 AMD North Bridge, Rev B3

WARNING!!! The Previous Performance Of Overclocking Has Failed, And The System Is Restored To The DeFaults Setting.

Press Any Key To Setup."

After entering Setup and not noticing anything being changed and having never done overclocking I exited Setup without saving. The PC starts up fine and runs fine until I restart. That message comes back. I uninstalled the printer but still its comes back.

I'm not PC illiterate but the fear of damaging my PC has kept me out the BIOS for almost all of my experience with computers.

Is there a solution to this issue?

Do you have the latest BIOS update for your model computer from it's Support Downloads webpage?

If not, Install it from Win7 which is perfectly safe.

If so, reset the CMOS: Clear CMOS - 3 Ways to Clear the CMOS - Reset BIOS Since you've made no changes it doesn't require backing up your settings as it will default to factory settings which should be running.

Check the Eventi Viewer>Admin view to google repeat errors or errors which occurred at time of problem. Check also the Performance log on Advanced Tools page accessed by clicking through WEI score at Computer>Properties. Look for cued issues on Tools page, and Generate a System Health Report.

Test your RAM using memtest86 CD for 5-6 passes or overnight. Test your HD using maker's diag/repair CD scan: Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp.

If problem repeats try to System Restore before you installed the Printer. Download the full software package for Win7 from printer Supporrt Downloads webpage and install as Admin. If only XP or Vista software exists, try install in Compatibility Mode: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/316-compatibility-mode.html

OK, There is a BIOS update for my MB. I downloaded it here.

MSI Global – Computer, Laptop, Notebook, Desktop, Mainboard, Graphics and more

There is a .1co file and an application in the zip file.There is also a text document for the MB model this update is for (which is my MB). There is also a WORD document with instructions for installing the update. The problem is it's for Win ME/98 and requires a floppy disc. I don't have a floppy drive.

Not sure what to do now.

I would not flash that mobo with the tools it provides. It appears to be too old to do it safely, from Windows. Others more familar with the brand/mobo may know how to do it without the apparent risks.

What are your exact performance issues now? Is the warning message repetitiive? If you think the problem is directly related to the printer install, then I would System Restore to before it was done to see if problems go away.

It is still a good idea to test your hardware with memtest and full HD CD scans. And study the Event Viewer and Performance log as given earlier as problems should reveal there.

\Check your drivers to make sure you have the latest; you can always roll them back if performance suffers from newer/different ones. Trying the mobo chipset if there is one available for VIsta or later would be good.
