Startup mystery

Since a couple of weeks my win 7 pro often freezes during starting windows.

If it starts then after a couple of minutes it suddenly reboots without command.
It starts in safe mode, but after a restart it sometimes happens again.

Now at night I dont shutdown anymore but only lock windows and turn off my screen.
Since then it works all fine!
So I think it's a cold startup issue...

Anybody an idea?

Hi TvG, wlcome to Seven Forums,

Around the time that this started happening did you install any new hardware or software?
Were there any software updates or Windows updates that you installed?
Are there any new entries that have appeared in the startup menu in Start > msconfig > Startup tab?

I hope this helps!

Hi TvG and welcome to the Forum.

Thank you!

I remember I saw windows execute auto updates, while I always turned that off.
That took hours to complete... and I possibly aborted that process.

I dont have virus software running.
But no problem when the PC stays on, isn't that strange?

You need to let the Windows Updates install. The first time it will take a while, but once you are current, it will be quick. Leaving your PC on all of the time is not a problem. Most here do that. You might reboot once a week just to refresh things, but there is no need to shutdown every time you leave the PC. == Also you need to get an anti-virus and install, this is important. Microsoft has one that comes with Windows, activate it.

Hi TvG,

Perhaps you could check for Windows updates again and let it run!

I dont have virus software running.

You need to get antivirus installed!
The one recommended by mitchell65 (MS Security Essentials) is a good Microsoft option.
There are a lot of good FREE ones out there.
I personally use AVG and have done for years.

I hope this helps!

Thank you all!
I did a huge windows update last night (146 updates!)
Took hours to complete... but now it seems to startup healthy.

I also installed AVG free...

Thank you again!

I use my PC mainly for music recording (Cubase)
I dont see a reason to upgrade to Windows 10, does it provide a better Performance? or protection?
I never experienced instability in Win 7 and all I want is working well, so I like to stay on Win7, unless...

You're welcome, I am glad it is sorted!

I will leave this upto others to comment on the music side and Windows 10!

If you don't have any issues, stay with Windows 7.
