Startup Repair error

My computer crashed after downloading a file. Now, whenever I startup the computer, it beings with a Startup Repair automatically. After a few seconds, it says that "Startup Repair cannot repair problem".

The details of the problem that it reports are these:

We've logged in to System Recovery Options and tried Startup Repair, it doesn't work.

System Restore doesn't work from any checkpoint. The first few times, it displayed an error code, but now it for some reason simply goes through with it, and doesn't end up changing a thing.

Startup repair doesn't work either.

I have windows 7 home premium 32bit.

I want to know how to get onto my computer again. PLease help!

First try booting into Safe Mode with Networking to install, update and run a full scan with Malwarebytes

If Safe Mode is not working, download, burn to CD or write to flash stick, boot and run a full scan with Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper.

Once the System is clean, boot into System Recovery Options via the F8 menu or disk as shown in tutorial, run Startup Repair repeatedly no matter what it reports. Post back results.

If this fails, try System Restore from Recovery Options list, then if that fails open a Command Line to run SFC -SCANNOW Run in Command Prompt at Boot.

As a last resort boot free Partition Wizard bootable CD to Explore C to see if your files are intact, make sure C or the 100mb System Reserved partition (preferred) is marked Active, then click on HD to highlight it, from Disk tab select Rebuild MBR, Apply. If Windows 7 doesn't start and you restored Active flag, run Startup Repair 3 Separate Times.

If these all fail you can copy out your data using your Windows 7 DVD or Repair CD: Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console or Paragon Rescue CD.

Then run Factory Recovery from its partition or disks you made or order from Tech Support, or find a Windows 7 installation DVD to clean reinstall using Product Key on COA sticker: Clean Reinstalling Windows 7

Ok, here's an update (it still doesn't work btw)

booting into safe mode does nothing different; I still can't get in.

Next I booted with Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper (windows defender offline). It found 6 threats: fixed 5 and quarentined 1. Booting again, though, nothing has changed.

Next, I tried doing system restores from all 4 of the restore points that it has. Doing so either gives me error 0x800700b7, or says that it restores the system, but then gives me the same error after re-booting it that I've always been getting when I try to boot Windows 7.

I then proceeded to open the command line and type in "sfc /scannow /offbootdir=f:\ /offwindir=f:\windows", it says "Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service". I try again, and it gives me a bunch of options, like /scannow, /verifyonly, /offwindir, /offbootdir, etc. I try sfc /scannow, and it says "There is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete. Restart Windows and run SFC again." So I close command prompt, and click restart, and startup repair errors me again, as usual. I go into command prompt, and run sfc /scannow. It gives me the same message. After trying this two more times, I decided this doesn't work. I'm going to move on to the next suggestion in a bit.

It's best to use the Win7 DVD Repair console or Repair CD to do the repairs. As Startup Repair reports corrupt file we're not focusing on hardware but on repairing files if possible, but it may take a few more passes of Startup Repair.

I would also run MSSS again to be sure you're system is clean as you were infected and may still be. The damage may repair, or not, depending on how serious and how clean.

Fill in your System Specs in the bottom left corner of post as best you can. We at least need to know your make/model.

Do you have Recovery Disks or a Recov partition on the HD if factory OEM, a Win7 Installation DVD, or backup image?

I am seeing a very similar issue after running Windows Defender from a CD and cleaning up a nice long list of offending parasites. I had given up on any restoration point and was ready to do a full factory re-image, but realized that I am not able to back up my files as the file backup option on the recovery menu of my HP desktop fails not recognizing the media and I have tried DVD-R and DVD+R as required and both fail. Pass the gas pipe please. I am not sure what to do next.

Thanks; I did not realize this was a 2009 thread - but then I am very old too. As much as I hate going back to the factory image, I may have no other choice. Yikes; it will even mean the call to reuse the previously installed Office product key. Oh the humanity. I will do more backups from now on. And I will be nicer to my pet rabbit too.
