State to track every call, email and internet click

Every phone call, text message, email and website visit will be stored for a year for monitoring by the state.

All telecoms companies and internet service providers will be required by law to keep a record of every customer's personal communications, showing who they are contacting, when, where and which websites they are visiting.

Despite widespread opposition over Britain's growing surveillance society, 653 public bodies will be given access to the confidential information, including police, local councils, the Financial Services Authority, the Ambulance Service, fire authorities and even prison governors.

They will not require the permission of a judge or a magistrate to access the information, but simply the authorisation of a senior police officer or the equivalent of a deputy head of department at a local authority.

Lets just say i'm a little pissed off at this

Aside from you being pissed, because i would be pissed it I wonder the amount of data this would be. Its by no means USA but theres a lot of people. I wonder how they store the data.

What I would get a kick out of, it setting up a single p4 computer to spam marcos or pre configured commands over and over. Okay I know it sounds lame and it would go unnoticed, but It would be kinda cool if massive amounts of people just flooded chains of repeated commands. Since I know prying eyes would be looking at our stuff (if i was in UK) I would just want to have a huge chunk of same things from my ip address.

A Government-bashing article in the Telegraph - no surprises there then. The rather more left-wing Guardian says today that these very same snooping plans are on hold!

Looks like the future will be more and more people spying on ordinary citizens, until eventually there'll be one bloke surfing the web and 60 million trying to catch him doing something dodgy. Then he'll install some hooky software off a torrent site and the entire web will go bang.

Hitler and Stalin would be very proud of this move by the UK government. I, like John and the vast majority in the country most certainly am not. Given the recent cases of data loss by government departments, and the fact that data stored on a computer can be accessed from anywhere in the world by unscrupulous people who have no regard whatsoever for their actions, then this marks a sad day indeed for the UK population. Access to this sort of data should, in my view, only be used in exceptional circumstances and should only be sanctioned by a Judge in a court of law.

People run the country; people who become politicians ruin it.

Oh my,

I always thought the UK was so different from the states. An awesome place with kindness and original freedoms. Now I'm rethinking a trip someday to see it in real life.
