Static IP Changes To Public Network

WIN7 SP1, Comcast Cable (internet only), Motorola gateway, Ethernet Cable,
Onboard Realtek LAN, IPv6 disabled.

My IP address of 192.xxx keeps changing to 169.254.52.105 and to public network.
I tried manually setting IP in v4 properties but that doesn't work nor does modem refresh
or ipconfig /renew.

I used to use a Netgear wnda3100v2 but it kept losing the internet signal for no apparent reason so I went to the ethernet cable. Unfortunately I failed to see if the IP was changing at that time.
Any help will be appreciated.

If you are connecting your PC to your Motorola cable modem directly (that is, not through a router), then your IP address should be assigned by the Motorola, which is assigned by your ISP.

I'm going to assume the second octet is 168 (192.168). If that is true....

This is a class C address (like 192.168.x.x), which are private addresses that cannot be used on the Internet.

Since it sounds like you are connecting to your Motorola directly, then you would not be using NAT, so there is no translation from the 192.168.x.x (LAN) address to the ISP assigned (WAN) address.

The 169.254 address is assigned as a "generic" (public) address when your computer cannot get an address from your DHCP server, router or modem.

At least, that's how it works here in Australia.

I would contact your provider and check with them as to the address that should be assigned.

If the second Octet is not 168, for example, your IP address is 192.0.1.0 - 192.167.255.255 then such addresses are valid for internet usage, but I would still contact your ISP.

You are correct, the full IP is 192.168.0.2.
If I cannot connect to the internet via that ip then how do I connect ??
Providers free support is clueless, suggests replace the ethernet cable or have my machine inspected by a tech.

Why am I not surprised. Level 1 support is so frustrating.

Of course, you do need to do all the elimination tasks, like replace cable, factory reset the Motorola etc. Did you get any documentation from your provider with configuration details, or a CD with configuration software? If so, I'd also work through those.

Your ISP can also test that your Motorola is working properly. if they can't even log into it then you have an external propblem (eg phone line etc).

Is your network configuration set to get IP address and DNS servers Automatically?

Has it ever worked with the combination of equoment you have now?

PC----------public network-----X-----No Internet Access (I think?)

I have been to the motorola config page, last time I did have internet access but noticed my port forward settings had changed from .2 to .3 (minor inconvenience) but internet worked,

So what changed when it stopped working? Did you make changes to your configuration?

Do have system restore enabled? If so try restoring back to the last time it worked.

You have port forwarding set up? If the port forwarding forwards to a different IP address I don't know why you would need to do that. Typically port forwarding is for redirecting ports not IP addresses in a single PC environment.

Are you saying that 192.168.0.2 (or .3) actually worked? If that is true then your Motorola is doing NAT.

Did you factory reset the Motorola?

For wireless the ip ends in .1 it ends in .2.
Nothing happened that I'm aware, no network programs installed, nothing detected by ms security essentials or superantispyware.
I was juust advised of ghost click, I went to the check site and no bot ware detected allthough that seems to be what my systtem is doing.

Ghost click redirects web traffic based on hacked DNS server entries on your computer. If I understand you correctly, you have no internet access at all from your computer...

Can you post the results of an ipconfig /all

(Start, run, cmd, ipconfig /all).

With the exception of the last digit, that has been my IP address since joining Comcast July 2011.
When, for no known reason, it changes to 168.254.52.105, I have no internet access and show connected to a public network.
