Hi Guys

I'm changing over internet companies. I have been looking at the o2, a package called 'The Works'

O2 | Home Broadband | Which package is right for you?

As i do a fair bit of downloading, gaming and have 3 other computers connected to the web too, it makes sense to have unlimited usage.

I have been looking at the "All Rounder" too, but upload speed is slower (Will this effect gaming)?

My question is, what benefits dose a Static IP have? Am i right in understanding that every time you connect to the web, you get a different IP. Where as a static up will stay the same so no Wireless drop outs?

With O2, I dont think you will get static IP. I like The Works plan though.

Unless you are running some sort of server from home then a static IP has no real benefit.

Also if you are thinking of going to O2 then maybe you should give this a read -thinkbroadband :: O2 publishes traffic management information for products

The network that O2 uses is great, but if the traffic management that is mentioned in that article bothers you then you could take a look at BE which is the same network (owned by O2) without the traffic management.

As i understand, they will lower everyone's usage during peak times so everyone gets fair usage?

Yes, it looks like they drop all download speeds to stupidly slow between 4pm and midnight weekdays and midday to midnight weekends.

Correct. I'm with O2 for billing purposes, but when I check line speed it comes back as Be Un Limited.

Yeah, I would recommend BE too. I'm currently on their BE Unlimited package (£17.88 a month, with NO CONNECTION FEE), and it's superb. You get one Static IP for free, so you can test it out, see if it's any good for you, and if not get a Dynamic IP.

I use the connection for gaming, torrenting and YouTube all at the same time and it holds up brilliantly. There are very few, if any issues, which are always resolved from their Brilliant support team. They are in Bulgaria though, so some people may be a bit hard to understand.

And when they say Unlimited they mean it, my neighbours on O2, and at Peak times he get's around 8-9 megs, while I get 16-18 megs. Around 1.5 km from an exchange.

One little nag issue is the router they supply. The "BeBox"/Thomson 585v7 isn't the most user friendly, nor feature packed router and doesn't support N yet. But according to this:

There will be a new one soon. There's also a BEUsergroup at BE Usergroup which has an IRC channel, and can help with quite a few problems.

So, overall I'd recommend BE Unlimited (Equivalent of the All Rounder) or BE Pro (Equivalent of the Works), simply because you get a lot more for the same price in the case of BE Unlimited or a lot more for LESS with BE Pro.

All in All, you should wait for Google Fibre to come to the U.K. (Just Kidding)
