Hi folks,

Just recently my Steam software has begun to crash when executed.

I hit the icon, it loads then silently crashes. I have tried reloading it, running it in Admin, nothing seems to be working. Has anyone experienced anything similar?

Cheers,

Hi elZee,

Copy/paste this into your FF or IE addressbar and press enter, it will run the Steam Diagnostics and output a report identifying any codecs/drivers or other configuration causing Steam to crash ;)

steam://support/?Issues=*

If Steam continues to crash after trying the recommendations shown on the Diagnostics report, please exit from Steam and then try deleting all files and folders in the Steam directory except for steam.exe and the SteamApps folder.

Let me know how you go.

Steven

Steve thanks!

Now why the hell couldn't Steam themselves tell me that?

Regardless .. no change!

I've discovered and removed 7 trojan files (in an AVI codec directory) of all places! Followed the steps by removing all files from the steam directory (bar the apps dir and the steam executable) .. no change.

Interestingly my AVAST software won't run when attempting to fire up the scanning section and SUPERAntiSpyware.. free edition also crashes on startup. I've also done a check for Vundo .. no vundo apparent.

Spybot Search&Destroy found the trojans but nothing else.

I think it might be time to do "the big format" and start again!! Bugger!

PS: I've just discovered that IE won't run either?? .. WTF is going on?

I was going to suggest you uninstall/re-install Steam but it sounds like you have bigger problems.

Running CHKDSK might help verify that there is not hardware problem.
