Steam Launching Game Issues

I have built myself a new computer as my old one was out of commission.

Spec:

AMD Phenom II 965 3.4Ghz
6GB Kingston Hyper-X DDR3 1800mhz
Asus M4AT7 Deluxe
Plextor Blu-Ray Read/Write 12x
WD Raptor SATA 300GB 10k RPM
Seagate 1TB 7200 RPM
XFX Radeom HD 5850
Asus 25.5" LCD
Klipsch ProMedia 2.1

Can anyone shed light on this?
I purchased Windows 7 Ultimate Upgrade. I used Windows XP Pro OEM to validate for the upgrade install. I tried to install to install the 64-bit edition, but it would not allow me too. I would like to use the 64-bit edition since I have 6GB of memory and paid for a 64-bit version.

I just wanted to be clear on what my entire set-up was so I could narrow down the problems.

Steam, when I installed, everything went well, the game installs went well as well, however, when I go to launch the game, it tells me its going to load, then never loads, and appears as if I never tried to launch it in the first place.

Any assistance is highly appreciated.

Thanks:D

Hi Steel,

I'm not exactly sure what your problem is? Are you talking two different problems? You mention a steam problem, but you also mention an installation problem with Windows Ultimate x64.

FYI, I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and I have steam installed and running without problems. My point is that steam does work with W7 x64.

If you could clearify your problem I'm sure someone will be able to help you.

Thanks.

Alright, Steam does not launch the games, it says it does but doesn't.

2nd problem. Why cant I use the 64bit ultimate version (upgrade) I bought, when I installed XP Pro first....it seems it wont let me use the 64 bit OS, only the 32. It tells me its not compatible.

To answer your second question first...to upgrade from XP to Windows 7, you'll need to do a clean install, meaning you'll have to overwrite your XP hard drive. Also, (if you have a 32-bit version of XP) you can't "upgrade" from a 32-bit to a 64-bit...meaning (again) you have to do a clean install. That's most likely why you're getting a compatibility notice. I'm sure there's a tutorial on how to do a clean install in the tutorial section here, but its late and i'm about to call it a night so you'll have to look for it yourself, sorry.

As for your steam issues, I would do a complete reinstall and go from there. Also make sure you'll logged in.

Later ....zzzzzzzzz

Do a Full CLEAN install on a newly formatted (and therefore happy) drive.
(forget about xp completely, pretend it does not exist at this point).

2. once windows 7 x64 is running smoothly and you have your desktop just the way you like it...then install steam. It should work like a charm (I am using it on my x64 system--no problem. I DID INSTALL Steam on my second harddrive though. Lots of space for all the steam games. I did not want my steam directory mixed in with my windows install-- easier to keep my "games" harddrive neat and tidy..and defragged properly.)
Windows 7 x64 on my C drive. Steam directory + games on my E drive.
Works like a charm.

For clarification:

I too encountered this same problem with Steam. The problem went away when I performed a clean install of the OS, and it sounds like that's the same thing the OP did.
