Solved Stereo only option in Sounds applet in Control Panel

I have a Creative Labs and a Logitech z-5500 5.1 sourround system. Originally, everything worked fine so I know this is not a hardware problem. I've recently had to reinstall Windows 7 Ult 64, and now I'm only getting stereo sound out of my 5.1 system. Going into Sounds/Diagnostics in control panel I see there's only an option for STEREO, not 5.1 Surround. When I go to the Creative diagnostics and switch from 2/2.1 sound to 5.1 sound, the drop down menu immediately switches back to 2.1. Any suggestions on how to get my sound system fully functioning? I've disabled the onboard sound in the BIOS of my motherboard and made sure the connectors are installed correwctly.

Thanks!

Chris

Download the correct 64-bit driver from the Creative support website if you haven't already.
The one installed by Windows 7 Setup may not allow the device to be fully functional.

NineNine7,
Welcome to SF. You may also want to review all your drivers for being up to date. Windows will do a very good job but installing all the latest drivers isn't always one of them. GPU, sound cards and other important drivers should be retrieved directly from the manufactures site and matched to your specific needs. In device manager you can also have windows look for updated drivers but going to the Mfg'r site is in my opinion your best option and something to do at least once a year. Remember the version number of the drivers your updating and if you don't like the way the new driver is working you can always remove and reinstall the older driver. Cheers and good luck !

I figured it out. Because I disabled the onboard sound AFTER I installed Windows, I also had to go into Device Manager and delete the driver. Once I did that and rebooted, I had my options back in CPL/Sounds/Test. Lesson learned: Disable any onboard devices when using a third party device BEFORE OS installation.

Thank you!

997,
Good job and oh so true when you have on board sound and PCIe together conflicts can occur. Glad you solved it so quickly and we'll see you around again.

Appreciate the response. Now I have to find out of the new RevoDrive X2 drive is compatible with my Asus Crosshair IV mobo, but that's on the OCZ forum. I don't feel like spending $600 on a card and have it not work.

997,
We're hearing very good things on the Revo and I see no issues with it on your mobo, but that being said I would contact ASUS directly as well as seeing the blogs. That should be a wicked combo and please keep us advised on your progress and any issues good or bad.

Currently I have a 5 disk RAID 0 with the WD HLFS VelociRaptors; getting 485MB/s throughout going by Sisandra 2011. This is just below the BW of the original RevoDrives. X2 is around 720MB/s.

I'm looking at getting the new Crosshair V AMD 990FX mobo with the new Bulldozer chip when it comes out. Not alot of choices for memory for AMD; I just had to return some Corsair XMS RAM because it was tested exclusively for Intel i7 and would hang on boot in my motherboard. AMD's new AM3+ chips will support 1866 MHz RAM without having to tweak the BIOS settings. Unfortunately, Bulldozer will not work in a standard AM3 socket, and I'm not going to see much improvement on upgrading from my present Phenom X4 955 to the 1100T x6 model. So I will wait until summer and do a total rather than incremental rebuild.
