Microsoft today released a press statement stating that Steven Sinofsky has been named President of the division. He now assumes responsibility of the Windows business unit including both the engineering and marketing functions for Windows, Windows Live, and Internet.

"Steven Sinofsky has demonstrated the ability to lead large teams that deliver great products. The work he and the team have done in getting ready to ship Windows 7 really defines how to develop and ship world-class software." said Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer.

This comes as Microsoft is putting the finishing touches on Windows 7 and is getting ready to release the RTM. "Windows 7 is receiving terrific feedback from customers, partners, analysts alike, and the entire Windows team has done a great job." wrote Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer in an internal to employees announcing Sinofsky's promotion.

There has also been some other exec reshuffles at Microsoft reports Tech Flash. Bill Veghte, the senior vice president in charge of Windows sales and marketing, "will take a new leadership role in the company to be announced later this year.", says Ballmer. Tami Reller, currently the chief financial officer for the Windows Division, will take on the additional responsibility for marketing.

This is pretty cool considering I emailed Steve multiple times during the beta process telling him my problems and he was always so quick to respond and even would tell me what they were doing to fix it and when it was fixed. This looks like a good move to me...

Sinofsky seems to be the driving force behind the entirely new MS "experience" that Win7 has been - from the preparedness to listen, the refined desktop experience that is Win7 to the Beta and RC Trials that we are all enjoying.
Let alone the short lead in to the intro of 7 and its dramatic acceptance in the IT community.

I'm not sure that promoting him will be beneficial to the user community because it puts him yet another step removed from us, the users, but the MS Management structure is a mystery to me, so who knows.

I agree it will separate us from him a little bit more, but a good leader can instill good habits into his minions... ;)

I think it's a great move. I've never seen a development process as open as the W7 process has been. I think that is one of the reasons that W7 is getting such positive reviews. He listened to what we had to say, told the team, and they implemented it. If he can keep this up, the Windows 8 development will be so much easier.

It's great that Steve is the new president. He is a really good leader and actually is concerned about users. Why I like this move? Cause he knows that what makes us happy has to be implemented to the OS and when we are happy and buy, they are happy. Everyone's happy.

Unlike the EU which chooses to complain about everything without using their brains, Microsoft at least knows what to do that benefits. Stupid EU can go die and do me a favour never to vote for them. EU chooses what they like. Microsoft chooses what we like.
