I was asked to look at a computer yesterday. The computer owner bought a new printer and couldn't insert the disk because the CD drive was stuck. I went there and realized that they are still using XP.

The computer no longer recognizes the optical drive so that's dead. I had my portable DVD drive with me and used that to load the printer drivers. I couldn't get the printer to work. I tried using the software to go online and see what the issue is but the browser is so outdated (IE 6.0) I kept getting errors and pages that wouldn't load properly. I just downloaded the newest driver on my computer (put it on a thumb drive) and might go back there today to try again. The printer does say it's compatible with XP.

Would it be a good idea to install 7 or get a new computer? I told the person that knows the computer owner not to do any personal/financial stuff because of the potential security holes.

Just spoke to the person that knows the owner. He knows it's old and told me to look for a new one. They don't use it for much, it belongs to a Stoners club where they make/print flyers, type meeting notes, general browsing. I think it also has one security camera connected to it. I'll have to see if it does and it that software is compatible with the new computer before buying.

Planning to get 7, see here: https://www.sevenforums.com/installation-setup/416670-hp-notebook-15-ay009dx-refusing-boot-windows-7-install-media.html#post3406391
Found out it's not a security camera but there is a lock on the font door that requires a keycard. The computer is used to change the times people can enter the building. I'm waiting to see who the manufacturer is so I can see if the system is compatible with the version of Windows the new computer has.

Might be easier to get IE8 from M$ and let the XP box find its own drivers. IE8 is a self extracting 16meg file so it goes on a stick easily.

^I didn't realize all those ins & outs, but I do still have an inactive WinXP Home OS on two 80GB backup HDs, and the reason I prefer my Win7 is b/c when WinXP gets a BSOD it does not recover and requires a backup HD clone recovery procedure, whereas Win7 -usually- recovers automatically.
Tnx for the ^info; good to know.

I have a second PC running XP SP3. It's a 2007 Dell. SATA drive connectors, upgraded to the full 3GB of RAM that XP can use. I use it mainly for games that 7 can't handle well, since I seem better able to run DOS games on it(even with DOSbox, my 7 PC doesn't seem to like them as well), it can handle the 16-bit programs that 64-bit 7 can't run, and some other games have given me issues in 7. Firefox runs on it.

I'd wager though that if it's an early model PC from 2001-2004 it's probably no longer a useful machine, hardware or software.

There must be something to XP that keeps people using it. I never used XP - my first PC was Vista. So I was always wondering what the XP magic is.

My first OS was 98se and it was incredible compared to some older OS versions except it was prone to crashes and difficulty getting full update files due to my slow internet connection at the time, which also crashed the computer. Then came WinMe, the undisputed crash king from MS, in my opinion. It was a steep learning curve for an amateur like myself. When XP came out, it was light years better then 98se in terms of speed and stability. I still keep it running as my second OS (dual boot) mainly because I have hardware & software that where built to run on it and despite some who say that Win7 will run all that older hardware, yes it will, but usually only the basic functions of the device ie. printers/scanners etc. and trying to find/download drivers for older hardware that will give me full functionality running Win7 is nye impossible. Then came Vista, which in my opinion was much slower and clunkier than XP. When I got Win7, it was even better than XP and I will stay it with for a long time, I hope. As for Win8 & Win10, I guess that I can't see any features appealing enough with them to make me change to them. But then again, these are just the opinions of an old dude that sometimes resists change when he finds something that works good for him.

Yep, don't scold me but I learned to hate XP and i had it on 5 computers.

Seven rules in my humble opinion. Didn't use it until 31 May 2012 - a day which will live in infamy..:D
