Storage HDD Starting/Stopping At System Idle

Hello-

This machine has an SSD for the OS and an HDD for storage, Downloads, My Documents, My Pictures,

My Videos, etc. Page File is also on Storage HDD.

I have the Power Plan set up for High Performance, the SSD set to Sleep in an hour (NO hibernation!),

and the Display shuts down in 30 mins. Screen Saver is set to engage after 15 mins of inactivity.

Also, while the machine is sitting there idling, before the 60 min Sleep time arrives, the HDD will start

and stop randomly on its own.

After waking the machine I go about my business online, and if I want to download something there's

a lag as the HDD turns on and spools up. It just started doing this and we haven't made any changes

to the system that should warrant this behavior.

In Power Options> Advanced Settings, there is a value for turning off hard disk after 'x' amount of minutes.

I'm wondering if this has anything to do with it, and why now?... we haven't touched any of that stuff.

The only other thing I can think of is a Service is arbitrarily starting before the SSD goes to sleep in the

1 hour setting... but how so?... unless it's something in the Page File, or other menu items we moved from

C:\ over to D:\... Perhaps 'Desktop' shouldn't be on D:\, but rather C:\ (?)...

We've included some photos to look at.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Rgeards-

tim

Hmm Tim I am assuming that you have scanned the machine with the usuals sfc chkdsk and MBAM etc?

Anyway that is where I would start and have you added any new software recently or I suppose if you uninstalled that magician it might have some influence on what is happening.

The spinner shutting down I really don't know maybe it needs a test with the Seatools app and as I have not used spinners for some time now and remembering they used to have their own dedicated software on board and which I used to scrub off perhaps that has got messed up.

The advanced power settings for power what is actually set in the hard disk values?? I use high power settings on all my machines and you can see what is in mine and it just puts machine to sleep after that timing value. Now as for a screen saver I never use one preferring to just let the machines go to sleep.
I wonder what resetting it back to default would do??

To be honest I don't know much about the page file stuff so cannot comment.

Now may sound a bit odd but I am wondering of disabling the Avast for a trial would be of any use - can't do any harm and you need not be on the net while trialing that.

Yes, and we ran 'sfc /scannow'... no issues.

We'll look into what you've commented on, John.

As far as Avast goes, we switched over to Kaspersky Internet Security a bit over a year ago. IMO, a way

better product in general, but Avast Support seemed better.

We'll play around with it, see if anyone else jumps on board, and reply when a solution is found.

Thanks, John.
