Solved Storage question

Hey everyone i have a 128gb SSD as a boot drive but i'm also using it to store my games on and its becoming quite full due to the games i have installed and i wanted a 2nd drive that would be big enough was thinking about a 240gb ssd for my games for speed but deciding on a 1TB hard drive instead since cheaper and much more storage but i want it to be fast even though not ssd fast but good enough still and fairly quiet also i was looking at the WD Black 1TB edition in particular does anyone own this drive and if so how quiet is it also to note i'm using a fractal define r4 computer case so it would be quieter in my case if its quiet in yours one more thing to note if going to recommend a hard drive please meet the criteria of

-1TB Size
-Low Noise
-Speed

i know its a lot asking for low noise and speed from a hard drive but let me know what you guys think

I'm no fan of WD drives, only two failures in last 10-11 years, both WDs. I currently use a Seagate enterprise 500GB version of this: Seagate Constellation ES.3 ST1000NM0033 1 TB 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Newegg.com for storage and I don't hear anything.
WD also has the VelociRaptor series which is the fastest SATA 6GBs drive. Western Digital VelociRaptor WD1000DHTZ - Newegg.com

All 7200RPM SATA 6GBs drive will have nearly identical performance. The VelociRaptor is 10,000 RPM.

how does this compare with the western digital black edition in noise and speed?

For the money, the Seagate 1TB-3TB Barracuda drives are phenomenal. I have 2-2TB drives and they are rock solid.

I was way off. I was referring to Average Rotational Latency and not access time and the figure I quoted should be 4.17ms instead. Sorry for the confusion.

For what it's worth, here are the numbers for the new Seagate Barracuda's. 2TB, 7200.14. Neither have an OS on them, one has User Data and all sorts of files stored on it, the other only has video files.......which is why, I suspect, the difference in the graphs. All in all, great drives for storage!

Thanks for clarifying. But even the 4.17ms I have never seen. It is always around 15ms. The nums that kbrady1979 shows are also like this.

I think the Average Latency of either 4.16/4.17ms was just a advertised number that some manufacturers used. It looks to be how long it takes to actually get the sector under the head, and that would depend more on spindle speed than anything. For storage, the Read/Write speeds are actually just as important(if not more so) than latency or seek time.

Agreed for sequential R/W. But for random, the R/W speed is of lesser importance. That's where the SSDs come in because their access time is appr. 150 times faster than on HDDs. Their R/W speeds are only a bit faster.

Yeah, latency is a mathematical number. It's the average time a bit of data will be from the heads, which is 180 degrees away.
