Hi all

I am trying to upgrade a solicitors network.

they have a server which they use only for storing there files. all desktops (7 only) connect to the server to access the files.

I am thinking to skip server and have something else like a network hard drive or something. But they also need daily backups. To save money from buying a server, what is best option to provide so they can carry on accessing files and same time get regular backups but don't have to pay for server?

Thanks in advance

It doesn't have to be a server but you will have to store the backup somewhere and you will need backup software. Easiest solution would be another computer which runs whatever OS with suitable backup software installed and either sufficient storage space for the backups or a cloud storage option.

You didn't mention any specifics at all and it sound like this is some sort of client/service relationship you have set up. I am wondering why you are messing with their data if you don't know the differences of a server backup system on a network and a simple HD. There are many, dozens even hundreds of considerations and you haven't mentioned the importance of this data. I imagine it would have to be of some mild import and they aren't just backing up system for convenience sake. You didn't mention any User level security or file permissions.Doesn't sound like the client even know what they need or want in order to ask the right questions so you can direct them to a proper solution. But I am just assuming all of this from a very vague, 2 sentences you wrote.

A business network (even a small one) can be quite complex and have very specific requirements. There are many factors that need to be considered when setting up or installing a network. If the organization does not have anyone with the knowledge and experience to make these decisions then they should hire a professional that does. Getting this wrong can be expensive.
