(solved) Strange audio problem occuring

This is a strange one, and will require a longer post ... so sorry in advance.

For some very strange reason all of a sudden I have no audio on any Youtube video, video plays fine.. BUT I do have audio if I watch a vimeo video, or anyother video not hosted by Youtube.

I do have some clues as to what might have led up to the problem.

-I went to do updates on my motherboard MSI
-I downloaded and installed their live update utility
-then let it scan my computer... it told me I had a number of updates... two of them had to do with my onboard sound on the motherboard.
-I downloaded and installed those.... tested the audio ... everything worked fine, including YT

but
-After getting annoying permission messages from this motherboard live update utility I decided to uninstall the utility.

-That is when the YT problem started.
-So I reinstalled the utility again... rescanned.... but this time it only showed 1 of the two updates it originally showed. I installed the one audio update.

I wouldn't think that by uninstalling this utility, it would also uninstall the updates it made, but it appears that it did.

So with that long story in mind, what should I do? I've already tried to have the utility update again, but it did not fix the problem.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Youtube use Flash player. Reinstall the Adobe Flash and see if that corrects it.

Hey Fireberd, I took your advice and reinstalled flash.... no success I'm afraid. I did not mention in the original post
that I also tried on 2 different browsers, IE and my standard on firefox.

I'm just really scratching my head on this one... not sure what else I should try

The flash player is the usual fix for no audio, since it apparently works OK otherwise.

Not knowing what you updated with the MSI utility, there may be some other issue, but?? The only other thing I can think of is to use System Restore and restore back to before you first installed the Utility and see what happens. System Restore has an Undo feature if it doesn't help.

The sage continues

After my last post, I thought that I should also check google chrome to see if they YT videos played the audio on that. It didn't at first...

So I uninstalled, and reinstalled google chrome.... upon reinstal,l now the audio plays on google chome!
But it still does NOT play on firefox or explorer.

Let me ask a questions on the recommendation on restore settings..

-Last night I did that.... or tried... I actually created a restore point before doing the original motherboard updates. So I went to do a system restore .... and it locked up during system restore( I've never had that happen) ... now I did not do this in safe mode... I guess that would my next step. If I do choose to do a restore... should I use something either farther back or try that one that failed again in safe mode?

-I've been working on a very time intensive 3d project for work. Is there anychance I would lose any of my work to date using the system restore?

-If there is anything else you can think to try before a system restore, I would appreciate it, especially based on this new update regarding google chrome.

edit: Oh yea... after the google chrome install, I did do a reinstall on firefox... but the problem continues on firefox

System Restore does not (not supposed to) delete any user data or e-mails.

Completely uninstall/remove flash from both I.E. and Firefox. Then try a new install on each one and see what happens.

Completely uninstall it from both, I.E. and Firefox, restart the PC and then install on one of the browsers and see what happens.

Well I did what you suggested.... and even more

1) uninstalled using adobe uninstaller than did a clean install of flash (newest version) I did this in both Firefox and IE .... no success Google chrome continues to play audio on YT videos. firefox, IE does not.

2) I then tried to revert back to 11.7 archived version of flash... using uninstaller first, the reinstall archived version.... no success. Same situation chrome plays YT audio... others do not.

3) What I have not tried yet is completely uninstalling firefox and reinstalling. I just did the uninstall/reinstall on the flash player. I don't think you can even uninstall IE if I remember right.

Maybe I need to post this part in a different section, but maybe you know...

Prior to doing all of the above. I went back into safe mode and tried to again do a system restore... on the most recent checkpoint I had before doing the Mother board updates. (this is the same one I tried last night that failed or locked up. But again even in safe mode. It seems to lock up never getting past the screen that says "please wait system restore is initializing"

-What would your best guess be that the "initialzing" screen should stay up for before moving on to some type of progress screen? (again this is the first screen that shows up.) I let it set there like that for about a half hour. Than just did a hard shut down. I do have a lot of data and programs on my computer.

-I haven't yet tried to do a different checkpoint even before the one I have been trying.

This is not really an audio problem. Its more something to do with flash and other software. Probably posting in another forum section would be best.

OH goodness.... I am so embarassed. Please disregard the post above now, it is solved. But allow me to give you a good chuckle at my expense. After all of this (what turns out to be needless troubleshooting) a friend reminded me to look at the actual videos mute button. Sure enough for some reason, I saw it "X'd" HOW DID I MISS THAT?

He told me adobe flash video remembers the last settings used. What through me off I guess is the videos were playing fine when I checked Google chrome. But it makes sense, when I learned that google chrome uses a different version of flash, and I never use google chrome, so I would have never muted that button for any reason. Believe me I checked all my speaker settings, used the tests for the soundcard, and did all the ridiculous troubleshooting noted above and more.... stupid me!
