Strange drop down menu problems

I don't even know how to explain this properly

1. When I type a previously visited site in the address bar, usually that site will show in the dropdown menu (ie. you usually don't have to type the whole address and can just select from the menu). When I do this, the menu flashes but I can't get the dropdown menu to stay. When I use the arrow to display the dropdown menu, again the menu will flash quickly but not actually dropdown

2. If I am looking at other options/menus within windows (ie. trying to change mouse settings), the dropdown menu or slider bar options automatically change to the top item or the far left setting (on slider bar options) as soon as I open the tab/window. So for example, I was trying to change the mouse settings today and the mouse speed slider bar automatically changed to the slowest setting and I cannot click or slide it back to where I want it). As soon as I opened the tab for pointer options, I watched the slider move on its own and trying to slide it back didn't work.

There are a few other little things related to this but these are the most major ones - it is really hard to describe. I have tried searching on here and google but didn't come up with anything.

Any idea what is causing this and how to fix it???

Well I've only has this machine running 48 hours and haven't really downloaded anything unusual except rocketdock which I thought may be the cause so I uninstalled it and also did a system restore and it's still happening. I am not sure if it started immediately from my first startup or soon after but I noticed it within a few hours of first using the new computer.

Hi NinaJay :)
Have you updated and run a full system scan with MSE? Follow it up with updating and running MalwareBytes Antimalware... Post back any unusual findings please.
If you've been using CCleaner, open it and in the first window, uncheck "recently typed url's" to stop it from clearing your um... recently typed url's :p

I *think* I have solved the problem :) I am pretty sure my mouse is dying. Not sure why it produced those symptoms but as soon as I plugged in my laptop mouse, the problem went away  Or at least it seems to have gone away.

Thanks for answering my thread you guys :D

Orpheous, you are always coming to my rescue - I think you had better start billing me ;) :p

Edit: Yup, definitely the mouse. I just plugged it back in and the problem came back... took it out again and problem went away. Geez, I am better at diagnosing faulty devices than the guys who sold me the faulty graphics card :p

It is probably from my child continually grabbing the mouse, walking it around the house and bashing it against various things. Might not get a wireless as the next one :)

A client is having this problem on a nearly new Dell laptop, with or without a mouse plugged in. I have not found any solutions. Anyone have any ideas?
