I have 2 internal HDD drives, a 1 Tb master "C" drive and another for media which is named "Z" drive. I have a number of files that appeared on my Z drive that I cant really account for. I downloaded and installed Comodo backup free edition and that is all I've done out of the ordinary since the files appeared. I uninstalled Comodo but the files are still there.

I'll post a screen shot:

This is probably the longest I've ever had a Windows machine run without having to restore it to scratch. I'm used to restoring to "factory" about every 2 yrs. I've run with Win7 since new in 2009 and only recently (Nov, '14) restored to clean up the machine from all my 'xperimenting. LOL!! I may never need another machine.

Upgraded to 10 when it was still free, then installed 2017 update.
those look like the installer files from comodo.

you can safely delete those files if you don't wish to reinstall the software.

if you do want to reinstall, run the install program that you can see in the screenshot.

often when you download and run a single installer setup program, it 'unpacks' the install files and doesn't always remember to tidy up after itself - sloppy programming, naughty comodo!

Everything shown in the screen shot. There is a setup file shown and when I click on it the heading indicates "Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Setup" and an error message accompanies the pop up menu that indicates "error: no administrative privileges were detected".
If this was something having to do with Comodo why would it install on my Z drive and not my C drive? Why would anything having to do with the operation of my computer not default to the C drive?

And while I'm at it, is Comodo a good free backup solution? Are there any other recommendations for a free backup solution to backup to an external HDD?

some programs needs extra libraries from visual c++ to run, so they install that as well.

do you have z: as you data/documents folder?

everyone's got their fave backup programs - personally i use macrium reflect for my os, and synctoy for my data.

have you actually tried out comodo to see if it actually works for you or not? i mean actually trying to re-instate from a backup. it's a very good idea to actually test it, otherwise how can you trust it will work in an emergency?

Z has movies and music and thats it. I have not tried Comodo. I had Acronis but it's too buggy. I'll look at your suggestions.

Wow, I've been trying various backup programs and havent had any luck so far. Macrium came close except when I booted from the rescue disk the backup file on my external HDD that contained my C drive backup didnt show, as a matter of fact the entire drive did not appear. Kinda hard to reinstall it when the drive containing it doesnt even show.
So then I tried Paragon. So I cloned my C drive and created a bootable rescue disk, but when I booted into the disk nothing happened. Paragons interface appeared and I selected normal mode/main recovery environment and nothing happened...nothing.
So any suggestions for a free program, or really any program that works to clone and reinstall a drive?

I'm running w7 64 bit Home Premium.

I'm running w7 64 bit Home Premium.

I'm not sure what problems you are having with Macrium.

I use Macrium and EaseUS TODO Backup, in an alternating fashion.

Both work OK for me and are less problematic and simpler to use than Acronis or Windows.

Thae Linux recovery disk that comes with Macrium Free is often problematic. If you have the bandwidth to download the WAIK(1.7GB) the Custom PE version with Macrium 5 is preferable.

I'm not sure what problems you are having with Macrium.

The problem I had is that my external HDD did not show up when I booted the rescue disk. I have several drives, both internal HDD's and external HDD's and the one drive that I absolutely needed because it contained my backup didnt appear in Macriums backup list of drives

kado897,
I did download the WAIK(1.7GB), the Custom PE version with Macrium 5. All went well but unfortunately my backup HDD didnt appear among the various drive options, for whatever reason.

Actually.... I have never had any problems backing up with the Windows built in tools. I use the system image for emergencies and its never failed me yet. Having said THAT....... I also use EaseUS. You can never be too safe you know :).

There is a work-around which should overcome your problem of external HDDs not showing.
Use a Live Linux CD (e.g. Ubuntu) to copy the backup file, from your external HDD, to your non-OS HDD.
You should then be able to select it using the rescue CD.
