Strange highlighting problem with XP

I know this is not windows 7 but please help. I have been having problems with my left click with my mouse pad on my laptop. It will select multiple icons at once. Its windows xp home edition, 1 gb ram, 2.6 intel processer.

But when you post you might include more detail. Like what are you using the left click button for (what task are you trying to do) and what exactly do you mean it's highlighting multiple icons... are you saying you are on the desktop and press the left mouse button and it automatically highlights multiple icons without your doing anything?

One thing you might check are the settings in the mouse pad configuration menus. Make sure the left and right buttons have not been switched, etc. Control Panel -> Mouse -> should get you to settings...
